This invention pertains to a method for making a cylindrically-shaped element, and particularly a cylindrically-shaped element for use as a base sleeve for printing or as a support for a print form. The method includes wrapping a sheet of a material having a first end and a second end to bring the second end adjacent the first end to form a base sleeve having an axial seam of the first and second ends. The first end has a non-linear edge having an amplitude. Portions between the first end and the second end overlap and form the axial seam. The method can include applying an imageable material adjacent an exterior surface of the base sleeve that covers at least a portion of the axial seam.

Method for making a cylindrically-shaped element for use in printing

Methods and associated apparatus are disclosed for use in mounting particles on and de-mounting particles from a substrate having an array of tacky and non-tacky areas. The particles can be either electrically conducting or electrically non-conducting. Selection of electrically conducting particles is preferred. The substrate having an array of tacky and non-tacky areas can either be electrically non-conducting (e.g., a dielectric substrate) or electrically-conducting. The methods involve use of first and second electrode plates with the substrate therebetween, the plates having applied thereto a direct current potential, which potential in preferred embodiments is reversed in polarity for a number N of cycles. Methods and articles are disclosed using an electrically conductive surface adjacent the tacky and non-tacky areas to minimize static buildup on the particles and tacky and non-tacky areas.

Electrostatic methods and apparatus for mounting and demounting particles from a surface having an array of tacky and non-tacky areas

A unitary sinker finger is attached at its first end to a sinker bar. In a first embodiment the second end of the finger is attached to a fixed support member. The sinker finger has a loop formation region and a loop cutting region disposed thereon, with the loop cutting region being disposed intermediate the loop formation region and the second end of the finger. A cutting blade that is operable in the cutting region for cutting pile loops formed on the loop formation region of the finger. In a second embodiment the sinker finger is an arcuate member that cantilevers from the sinker bar. A loop cutter cooperates with the arcuate sinker finger to cut the pile loops formed on the finger at a location adjacent to the free end of the finger. A sensing arrangement for determining operability of the cutting arrangement is also disclosed.

Improved methods and apparatus are disclosed for efficiently and precisely adhering and centering particles on tacky areas on a surface containing an array of tacky and non-tacky areas. These improved methods and apparatus for particle attachment and centering involve holding and heating of the surface containing an array of tacky and non-tacky areas with particles adhered thereon for a period of time and at a temperature to allow the particles to adhere and center to the tacky areas. The surface containing the array of tacky and non-tacky areas can be heated either prior to, during or after a step of contacting the array with particles. Either discrete sheets or a continuous moving web of material having a surface containing an array of tacky and non-tacky areas can be employed. Each tacky area of an array of tacky and non-tacky areas has a size and bonding strength suitable for adhesion of one particle thereto in formation of an array. The array is populated with conductive-particles, is useful in the precise placement of particles on contact pads of electronic devices, such as circuit boards in semiconductor applications.

An improved contact printing process is disclosed whereby better contact is achieved between magnetic master and copy tapes through use of fluid pressure. Slippage between copy and master tapes is prevented by applying fluid pressure to the tapes in an area defined by the width of the tapes at the point where replication is initiated, and extending upstream along the length of the tapes prior to replication. High speed contact printing process for prerecorded magnetic tape

The present invention concerns a tape transporting device wherein mechanisms which can partially switch the master tape traveling direction have been established, and wherein a loop bin used for storing a master tape is established on a horizontal plane. As a result, the master tape exhibits no deformation attributable to gravity within said loop bin, and a since the copy tape can have a constant perpendicular or other angular orientation with respect to the master tape in the loop bin, the floor space needed for the tape transporting device can be minimized.

Tape transporting device

A tape transport for driving a continuous master tape and a copy tape through a tape contact printing station at a very high speed. The master tape has a prerecorded signal the reverse image of which is transferred onto the copy tape by the tape contact printing station. The tape transport enables the master and copy tapes to maintain contact and registration with the required degree of accuracy to produce an acceptable signal transfer which generates a high quality video signal for use in home video cassette recorders and viewing equipment.

A process and equipment is disclosed that is capable of duplicating magnetic tapes at speeds higher than 2.5 meters/second. Tape surfaces are selected that have sufficient roughness to readily permit air to bleed from between surfaces as they are held together by air pressure during the duplication process.
