An apparatus includes a polarization beam splitter (PBS) and an optical detector. The PBS is configured to receive a polarized optical signal transported via an optical communication path of an optical network. The detector is configured to receive from the PBS a first polarization component of the optical signal, and to produce a first electrical measure of the first polarization component. A processor is configured to determine a dynamic metric of the optical communication path based at least on the first electrical measure. Some embodiments also include a second detector configured to receive from the PBS a second polarization component of the optical signal. The second detector produces a second electrical measure of the second polarization component, and the processor is configured to determine the dynamic metric based on both the first and second electrical measures.

Optical network span sensing

A capability for cross-layer aware communication of a multipath data flow via a communication network is presented. The multipath data flow is transported using a set of multiple transmission flows based on a multipath transport protocol. The communication network supports a set of multiple communication paths. A controller is configured to determine a set of mappings between the multiple transmission flows of the multipath data flow and the multiple communication paths based on cross-layer state information, compute a set of path mapping rules for a network element based on the mappings between the multiple transmission flows of the multipath data flow and the multiple communication paths, and provide the path mapping rules to the network element. The network element is configured to apply the path mapping rules for mapping packets of the multipath data flow between the multiple transmission flows of the multipath data flow and the multiple communication paths.

Cross-layer aware communication of a multipath data flow via a communication network

Cross-layer information associated with a software defined networking-based (SDN-based) communication network is collected. One or more updates are sent to one or more network elements in the SDN-based communication network to control one or more local decisions made at the one or more network elements. The one or more updates are based on at least a portion of the collected cross-layer information. Preferably, the collecting and sending steps are performed by a controller implementing an SDN management plane associated with the SDN-based communication network.

Dynamic local decision control in software defined networking-based environment

An apparatus, e.g. an optical receiver, includes an optical front end and a processor. The optical front end is configured to coherently receive an input optical signal and convert the input optical signal to a digital-electrical data stream. The processor is configured to recover a data stream from the digital-electrical data stream. The processor is further configured to compare a correlation pattern of the recovered data stream with a pre-determined correlation pattern. The processor is further configured to determine, from the comparison, coefficients of a filter configured to recover data encoded on the input digital-electrical data stream.

Wavelength-tunable burst-mode receiver

Embodiments for optical communication are provided in which tunable receiver selects and demodulates a first channel of a WDM signal. An example receiver includes a tunable local oscillator for generating a local oscillator signal approximately centered at a first channel wavelength. An optical hybrid of the receiver receives at a first input a wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) signal with a M-ary modulation scheme, wherein M is an integer greater than 2, and at a second input the local oscillator signal. A plurality of detectors detect in-phase and quadrature components of the first channel wavelength output of the optical hybrid, which are digitizing by a plurality of analog-to-digital converters. A digital signal processor processes the digitized in-phase and quadrature components in order to recover data carried by the first channel of the WDM signal.

Tunable receiver

An example method includes receiving at a scheduling server status information concerning at least one transmit queue for a plurality of optical pass-through switches (OptSws). A schedule for transmissions to take place is determined based on the status information for the OptSws. A control message is forwarded to the plurality of OptSws in order that the schedule may be implemented. In an embodiment, a schedule is determined for a wavelength available to transmit a transmission by removing unsupportable transmissions from a candidate transmission list, determining a first transmission that is the one of the transmissions of the candidate transmission list which most preferably satisfies a given parameter, updating a usage list to reflect determination of the first transmission; and replacing the candidate transmission list with the residue set of the first transmission. The usage list reflects transmissions determined by the scheduler.

Apparatus and method for scheduling on an optical ring network

A control circuit for a tunable laser has a logic circuit configured to generate a plurality of digital control signals using a table of calibration parameters stored in that circuit. The logic circuit receives an input signal specifying, e.g., an optical communication channel, retrieves the corresponding parameter values from the table of calibration parameters, and generates the digital control signals that are digital-to-analog converted, amplified, and applied to the tunable laser. The table of calibration parameters may be custom-generated for each particular tunable laser to accommodate laser-to-laser variations. In addition, the table of calibration parameters may be periodically updated to correct for wavelength drifting due to laser aging. A control circuit of the invention can be configured to update the table of calibration parameters in a non-disruptive continuous manner while the tunable laser controlled by the circuit is used for data transmission. Certain control circuits of the invention can support channel-to-channel switching times on the order of 50 ns.
