In a method of forming a solid article of predetermined shape from a liquid which can be cured by exposure to radiation, a surface upon which the article is to be formed is provided. A predetermined region of the surface is exposed to a beam of radiation. Liquid is then supplied to an unexposed region of the surface such that a solid barrier, defining a surface of the solid article, is created at the interface of the liquid and the beam. The solid barrier is effective as a mold to contain the liquid which has been supplied but not yet cured until this liquid is cured. Such a method can be used to encapsulate a microelectronic device.

An ionically conductive accelerometer comprises a body of an ionically conductive material provided with at least three electrodes which are so arranged as to define a respective ionically conductive path extending between one of the electrodes and each of the other electrodes. The accelerometer is responsive to an acceleration or a component of acceleration acting along each path.

An ionic conductivity accelerometer comprises a layer of an ionically conductive material such as rubidium silver iodide (RbAg.sub.4 I.sub.5) deposited on an electrically insulative substrate with spaced electrodes in contact with the layer. The ionically conductive material may be mixed with an electrically insulative, chemically inert material such as quartz wool in order to alleviate susceptibility to cracking.

A chemical-sensitive semiconductor device in the form of a chemical-sensitive field effect transistor, suitable for testing relatively small volumes of a fluid analyte, comprises a substrate provided with a passageway, interconnecting its major surfaces, along which the analyte can pass. Drain and source regions are formed at opposite ends of the passageway and a chemical-sensitive gate region is formed on the sides of the passageway.
