A rolling-element clutch assembly including a first race member, a second race member and a plurality of rolling elements. The first race member defines a first race surface having a first ratchet surface portion. The second race member defines a second race surface having a second ratchet surface portion. The first race surface and the second race surface define a raceway therebetween. A plurality of rolling elements are disposed in the raceway. The rolling elements provide rolling support between the first race member and the second race member when the first race member moves in a first direction relative to the second race member. At least one of the plurality of rolling elements engages the first and second ratchet surface portions when the first race member moves in a second direction relative to the second race member. The engagement of the rolling element with the first and second ratchet surfaces impedes relative motion between the first race member and the second race member, thereby providing load transmission capability. The profile of each sawtooth incline may be formed from one or more flat planes. A rolling element separator may be provided, the separator allowing the rolling elements to freely roll when the first race member moves in a first direction relative to the second race member and to freely pivot into engagement with or disengagement from the ratchet surfaces when the first race member moves in a second direction relative to the second race member.

Rolling-element clutch assembly

A multi-mode rolling element clutch assembly including first and second race members and a plurality of rolling elements. The first race member defines a first race surface having a ratchet surface portion. The second race member defines a second race surface. The first second race surfaces define a raceway therebetween. A plurality of rolling elements are disposed in the raceway. The ratchet surface portion has a multi-mode ratchet mechanism for providing first and second ratchet configurations. When the multi-mode ratchet mechanism is in the first ratchet configuration, the rolling elements may provide rolling support between the first and second race members when the first race member moves in a first direction relative to the second race member, and one of the rolling elements may engage the first ratchet surface portion when the first race member moves in a second direction relative to the second race member, thereby providing load transmission capability. When the multi-mode ratchet mechanism is in the second ratchet configuration, the rolling elements may provide rolling support between the first and second race members when the first race member moves in the second direction relative to the second race member, and one of the rolling elements may engage the first ratchet surface portion when the first race member moves in the first direction relative to the second race member, thereby providing load transmission capability.

Multi-mode rolling element clutch assembly

Non-planar propellers or windmill blade assemblys are proposed which have tips that are curved to point in the same direction as the axis of rotation of the propeller. This non-conventional design results in a stronger, stiffer, and more efficient propeller or windmill.

Elliptical propeller and windmill blade assembly

A ball bearing/freewheel clutch is provided with an inner race member defining an inner race surface; an outer race member defining an outer race surface concentric with said inner race member; and a raceway between said inner and outer races. The inner and outer race members each have a series of short radially oriented sawtooth inclines on their respective inner and outer race surfaces at right angles to said raceway. A plurality of modified ball bearings are disposed in said raceway between said inner and outer race members, such that said modified ball bearings serve to prevent relative rotation of said inner and outer race members in one direction, and to transmit a torque between said inner and outer races. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, said modified ball bearings have flattened poles which engage said sawtooth inclines in one direction of rotation.

Combination bearing/freewheel clutch

A telescopic mast system has a base tube, a plurality of axially movable coaxial inner tubes nestable successively within each other and within the base tube, and a winch supported at the lower end of the base tube with a pair of preferably wire ropes driven thereby for extending and retracting the inner tubes. The base and inner tubes have collars at their respective ends, the collars of adjacent tubes engaging each other to limit extension thereof and to provide additional structural support during application of bending loads on the mast system. The ropes are connected to pulleys mounted near or within tube collars so that the ropes and pulleys are totally enclosed within the mast system. As the winch is rotated in one direction, the ropes axially move the inner tubes from a nested or stowed position within the base tube to a fully vertically extended operational position. When the winch is rotated in the opposite direction, the ropes apply a positive retractive force to the inner tubes and return them to the fully nested stowed position.

Extendible and retractible mast system

A linkage device connectable between adjacent ends of a tubular support member and payload member is adapted to rotate the payload member through approximately 180.degree. about the end of the support member between inoperative and operative positions by movement of an actuating rod longitudinally within the tubular member. The linkage device comprises first and second frames secured to adjacent ends of the members and four bars pivotally connected at opposite ends to corners of the frames, the first pair of bars extending within the frames and the second pair extending outside the frames. The actuating rod is connected to the first pair of bars and rotates them about their pivotal connection to the first frame when the rod is moved longitudinally within the tubular member. Both pairs of bars cause the payload member to rotate about the end of the support member through 180.degree. and into an operative position in longitudinal alignment with the support member.

Linkage device

A winch having a torodially-shaped drum with an axis of rotation and at least one cable wound on the drum having a cable length extending from the drum parallel to and substantially equally spaced from said axis at all times during rotation of the winch. The drum has negatively-curved and positively-curved surfaces joined at a common edge, the cable being wound on the negatively-curved surface and directed therefrom over the positively-curved surface in a direction parallel to the drum axis. This drum is used advantageously with the mast system described in application Ser. No. 246,112.

Toroidal winch

A microwave circuit and housing in which the housing cavity is reduced in size by providing threaded slots in side walls of the housing which receive tabs extending from the microwave circuit carriers. Pillars are inserted in the slots for maintaining the carriers in position on the bottom surface of the housing and for filling the slots. Reduced weight, height, and width is achieved with a reduced number of piece parts.
