A circuit pack blank occupies an unequipped position in an electronic equipment shelf that is cooled by forced-air convection. The blank incorporates two diffuser blades that protrude into a cooling space in the shelf adjacent to the blank. When air is forced through the cooling space at a constant velocity, a backpressure is generated that is equivalent to backpressures generated at cooling spaces adjacent to equipped positions. In addition, the blank has a faceplate that incorporates one or more cable trays used to retain cables at the unequipped position for future use.

In a battery pack made up of battery cells encased within a housing made up of a stronger outer housing portion and a weaker inner housing portion, the battery cells are secured to the stronger outer housing portion. Advantageously, the relative motion between the battery cells and the stronger of the housing portions that results when prior art battery packs are dropped, and which causes catastrophic failure of the prior art battery packs, is prevented. The battery cells may be secured to the stronger outer housing portion, for example, by gluing the battery cells to the stronger housing portion, attaching the battery cells to the stronger housing portion by using double-sided sticky tape, molding features into the stronger housing portion that immobilize the battery cells adjacent to the stronger housing portion, or providing screw holes through the stronger housing portion so that screws may engage the battery cell or an appendage thereto.

A step joint between two plastic pieces suitable for an ultrasonic weld joint. A first plastic piece includes a series of ribs, each rib having generally horizontal top surface. A generally vertical section extends upward behind the ribs. A second plastic piece includes a generally horizontal section for mating with the ribs, the horizontal section of the second plastic piece covering the generally horizontal section of two or more ribs. The second plastic piece also includes a generally vertical section suitable for mating with the generally vertical section of the second plastic piece. A plastic assembly according to another aspect of the present invention includes the first plastic piece and the second plastic piece, a joint between the first and second plastic pieces formed by an abutment between the generally horizontal surface of the second plastic piece and the top surface of the one or more ribs, and between the generally vertical surface of the second plastic piece and the strip of the second plastic piece, and a weld between the first plastic piece and the second plastic piece formed by melted plastic from a partial melt of the first plastic piece and the second plastic piece, the melted plastic flowing into the joint between the first plastic piece and the second plastic piece and hardening to form the weld.

A power adapter is disclosed for use in connecting electrical power to a telephone station via a cross-connect jack. The power adapter has a plug-end for mating with the cross-connect field and a jack-end for receiving a cross-connect patch cord. The power adapter includes a two-conductor permanently attached power cord. Bent wire technology is used to connect the contacts of the receiving jack with the contacts of the plug while blade insertion technology is used for making contact with the ends of the power conductors.

There is disclosed a cross-connect having a hinged rotating section panel which accepts multi-pair cables. The hinged section is mounted to a forward edge of a support section and the multi-pair cables are suspended between the two sections so that the cables remain in the same plane regardless of the position of the hinged section. The user cross connects between the cable pairs using the familiar modular plug and jack. The design of the cross-connect field is modular so that the cross-connect field can easily be added to as the system grows. The forward edge of the support panel slopes vertically to insure that the patch cords dress properly from top to bottom.
