A departure device couples to a bit using a connector that facilitates release of the bit from the departure device. The connector may be more millable than the departure device and can transmit axial and torque loads between the bit and the departure device. The connector may include a material having lesser strength or hardness than the departure device, and may be millable by the bit. Another example connector may have connection points with the bit, and a movable member of the departure device may a force to the connector and contribute to releasing the connection between the bit and the departure device. A tensile connector between the bit and the movable member may apply a tension force to the movable member, urging the movable member toward an extended position in which the movable member is aligned coherently with a sloped face of the departure device.

Millable bit to whipstock connector

A cutting apparatus and method to facilitate milling of a casing window by improving the interaction between the mill and the casing. The cutting apparatus comprises a whipstock having a plurality of ramp sections that provide a ramp profile arranged and designed to cooperate with the cutting structure of a mill to achieve a desired loading on the mill cutting elements during milling of the casing window. The plurality of ramp sections, having specific lengths and oriented at specific angles, adjust the loading on the mill as the mill cuts through the casing during formation of the casing window. The improved whipstock maintains a more balanced loading across the cutting elements during milling operations. Additional mill cutting structures may also be selected and evaluated to further balance the cutting load during window milling.

Balancing load on milling cutting elements

A coring system and method enable a single-trip operation for setting a deflector assembly, deploying a coring assembly and obtaining a core sample from a borehole drilled in a wellbore. The coring assembly has a barrel with a bore for collecting the core sample and has a coring bit coupled to an end portion of the barrel. The deflector system is arranged to deflect the coring bit into a side wall of the wellbore to drill the borehole therein. The deflector system includes a deflector and a collar. The collar, coupled to the deflector, restricts upward movement of the coring assembly relative to the deflector assembly. The collar may also be used as a retrieval device to engage the coring assembly and permit removal of the coring assembly and the deflector assembly as well as the core sample after the core sample has been obtained.

Coring bit to whipstock systems and methods

A cutting apparatus and method to facilitate milling of a casing window by improving the interaction between the mill and the casing. The cutting apparatus comprises a whipstock having a plurality of ramp sections which provide a ramp profile arranged and designed to cooperate with the cutting structure of a mill to achieve a desired loading on the mill cutting elements during milling of the casing window. The plurality of ramp sections, having specific lengths and oriented at specific angles, adjust the loading on the mill as the mill cuts through the casing during formation of the casing window. The improved whipstock maintains a more balanced loading across the cutting elements during milling operations. Additional mill cutting structures may also be selected and evaluated to further balance the cutting load during window milling.

Extended whipstock and mill assembly

A system and method facilitate sidetracking by eliminating one or more trips downhole. A sidetracking system includes a whipstock assembly and a stinger assembly. The stinger assembly has a stinger which extends at least partially through the whipstock assembly. The stinger is coupled to a sub of the sidetracking system by a releasable latch mechanism, such as a shear pin or collet.

Cementing whipstock apparatus and methods

A downhole tool includes a pressure activated flow switch for selectively actuating and deactuating a device, such as a reaming block. The flow switch is deployed external to the flow bore and includes a flow piston configured to reciprocate between axially opposed open and closed positions such that the device is actuated when the flow piston is in the open position and deactuated when the flow piston is in the closed position. The flow piston is configured to translate from the closed position to the open position when a differential pressure exceeds a predetermined threshold. The flow piston may be further configured to remain in the open position at differential pressures less than the threshold.

A method of milling a window through a casing in a primary well bore and drilling a sidetracked well bore into a formation including running a drilling assembly including a body having an axis defined therethrough, a piston that is movable within a cavity formed in the body, a stationary cutting structure coupled to the body, and a movable cutting structure coupled to the body, milling a window through the casing in a first trip into the primary well bore, drilling the sidetracked well bore in the first trip into the primary well bore, applying a differential pressure across the piston, and moving the movable cutting structure from the collapsed position to the expanded position. The movable cutting structure is coupled to the piston and is movable between a collapsed position and an expanded position.

Expandable window milling bit and methods of milling a window in casing

A technique facilitates sidetracking by eliminating one or more trips downhole. The technique comprises delivering a sidetracking system downhole into a wellbore, and utilizing a component of the sidetracking system to grip a wall of the wellbore. The sidetracking system may comprise a whipstock assembly and a running/stinger assembly in which the stinger assembly is designed for disconnection from the whipstock assembly after delivery downhole. After disconnecting the stinger assembly, the sidetracking system enables delivery of cement slurry down through the stinger assembly to form a cement plug at a desired location.

A method of milling a window through a casing in a primary well bore and drilling an enlarged sidetracked well bore comprises running into the primary well bore a drilling assembly comprising at least one cutting apparatus adapted to drill an enlarged borehole, milling a window through the casing, and drilling the enlarged sidetracked well bore, wherein the milling and drilling steps are performed in one trip into the primary well bore. A drilling assembly comprises at least one cutting apparatus operable to drill an enlarged borehole, wherein the drilling assembly is operable to mill a window through a casing in a primary well bore and drill an enlarged sidetracked well bore through the window in one trip into the primary well bore.

An expandable drilling apparatus is deployed upon a distal end of a drillstring and includes a cutting head and a substantially tubular main body adjacent the cutting head providing a plurality of axial recesses configured to receive arm assemblies configured to translate between a retracted and an extended position. A flow switch actuates the arm assemblies when a drilling fluid pressure exceeds an activation value and the drilling apparatus includes a biasing member to reset the arm assemblies when the drilling fluid pressure falls below a reset value.

Drilling and hole enlargement device

A downhole assembly comprises a whipstock and an expandable anchoring tool connected to the whipstock, wherein the tool comprises a body including a plurality of angled channels formed into a wall thereof and a plurality of moveable slips, wherein the slips translate along the angled channels between a collapsed position and an expanded position. A method for performing a thru tubing operation in a well bore comprises running a downhole assembly comprising a whipstock and an expandable anchoring tool in a collapsed position through a first diameter section of the well bore, orienting the whipstock, and translating a plurality of pairs of slips of the expandable anchoring tool to an expanded position into gripping engagement with a casing lining a second diameter section of the well bore that is larger than the first diameter section, wherein the pairs of slips are axially spaced apart along the expandable anchoring tool.

Thru tubing tool and method

An expandable downhole anchoring tool positionable within a wellbore for use in cooperation with drilling equipment comprises a body including a plurality of angled channels formed into a wall thereof, and a plurality of moveable slips disposed in the same radial plane around the body, wherein the plurality of moveable slips are hydraulically translatable along the plurality of angled channels between a collapsed position and an expanded position. A method of setting an expandable anchor within a wellbore comprises running the anchor into the wellbore in a collapsed position, and expanding the anchor into gripping engagement with the wellbore, wherein the anchor is adapted to expand up to at least 1.5 times a collapsed diameter of the anchor.

Expandable anchor

A liner running system for placing a liner in a well bore comprises a latch sleeve connected to the liner and a running tool releasably attached to the latch sleeve. The latch sleeve has a wall thickness substantially the same as the wall thickness of the liner, and the running tool has an outer diameter less than or equal to the inner diameter of the liner. The latch sleeve may be connected into the liner at any location along its length. The running tool is releasable from the latch sleeve via hydraulic actuation or mechanical actuation. Optionally, a swivel may be connected to the liner. The swivel has a wall thickness substantially the same as the wall thickness of the liner. The method for lowering the liner into the well bore via the liner running system comprises rotating the liner, pushing the liner, pulling the liner, or a combination thereof.

Liner running system and method

A downhole tool is disclosed that functions as an expandable anchoring tool, capable of passing through a restricted wellbore diameter while in a collapsed position and thereafter translating to an expanded position for grippingly engaging a larger wellbore diameter. An embodiment of the tool includes a body including a plurality of angled channels formed into a wall of the body and a plurality of moveable slips. The plurality of moveable slips translates along the plurality of angled channels between a collapsed position and an expanded position. The slips may include a plurality of extensions corresponding to and engaging the plurality of channels.
