An electro-magnetic coupling system for transferring torque between a pair of coaxial spools of a gas turbine engine is provided. The system includes a first rotor rotatable with one of the spools, a second rotor rotatable with the other of the spools, and a stator. The first and second rotors and the stator are coaxial with each other. The second rotor operably couples the first rotor and the stator. The first rotor carries a plurality of magnetic flux-producing formations which produce a first magnetic field. The stator carries a plurality of electrical winding coils which are energisable to generate a second magnetic field. The second rotor carries an arrangement of interpoles which modulate the first and second magnetic fields such that the modulated fields interact to transfer torque between the spools.

Electro-magnetic coupling system

An electromagnetic component for mounting in a frameworkso as to provide a stator segmentof an electrical machine. The component comprises a magnetic flux guideand an electrical windingfor electromagnetic interaction with the magnetic flux guide. The component further comprises electrical terminalsfor connecting the electrical windingto an electrical network, at least one fluid pathwayfor receiving a flow of cooling fluid in normal use, and at least one fluid connectorfor coupling the fluid pathwayto a source of cooling fluid.

Electromagnetic component for a stator segment of an electrical machine

An actuator is provided having a temperature activatable actuating member comprising an inductively couplable material. The actuator has an electrical heating element for electrically heating the actuating member. The heating element is configured to inductively couple with said material when an AC current is passed through the heating element such that an opposing electromotive force is induced in the heating element. A detector is provided for detecting activation of the actuating member by sensing a change in the AC impedance of the heating element.

Temperature activatable actuator

There is disclosed a self-regulating electric heater assembly arranged to heat an electrically conductive substrate such as a flexible substrate of shape memory alloy for use as an actuator. The heater assembly comprises a plurality of substantially rigid PTC elements arranged in spaced-apart relation to one another in a flexible array, said PTC elements each having a contact surface arranged in contact with the substrate and being urged against said substrate so as to remain in contact with the substrate upon flexure of the substrate. The substrate serves as one of a pair of electrical conductors electrically connected to the PTC elements for the supply of electric current to the PTC elements.

Self-regulating heater

This invention relates to a magnetic gearbox, comprising: an inner rotor having a first plurality of magnetic flux sources; an outer rotor having a second plurality of magnetic flux sources; and, a modulator having a plurality of pole pieces positioned between the first and second magnetic flux sources and separated from each by an air gap, wherein upon relative rotation of the inner rotor, outer rotor and modulator the first and second magnetic flux sources and pole pieces are arranged to provide a modulated magnetic field in the air gap adjacent each rotor; wherein either or both of the modulator and inner rotor include at least one nozzle for directing fluid radially across the respective air gap so as to impinge on the adjacent rotor or modulator.
