An optical bar code reader includes a pair of clock sensors and a pair of data sensors for respectively reading the data track and clock track of the optical bar code. The data track sensors are offset from the clock track sensors and the data and clock track sensors detect changes at the edges of the bars in the optical code.

A system for establishing the lateral position of a web without requiring the web path to change direction. The system utilizes a support surface that is curved in its transverse direction concave towards the web, a guide extending longitudinally along the surface, and a roller that is positioned against the support surface so that the web will be urged laterally against the guide and will conform to the curvature of the surface, thereby increasing the lateral column strength of the web.

In a reprographic or graphic arts application halftoned latent images of a continuous tone original image are created by imagewise exposure of a photosensitive member through a pressurized screen assembly. A transparent platen supports the original with one or more lamps being provided to illuminate the original resting on the platen. The light image produced is transmitted by an optical system through the pressurized screen assembly to the image plane of a photosensitive member to create the latent image. A pressurized cell within the screen assembly prevents sagging of the screen such that in the image plane of the projected image, the spacing of the halftone imaged pattern is uniform. A single blower system is provided to supply either a negative or positive pressure for the cell, depending upon the direction of sag.

A head transport assembly includes a sled supporting a magnetic head for movement along a guide path generally oriented toward the drive spindle of a drive motor. The sled, which is supported against a guide rod defining the guide path, includes two adjustment points along the guide rod--a first adjustment point proximate the head and a second adjustment point outboard of the first in relation to the drive spindle. By acting on the first point to pivot the sled about the second point, the head is brought onto a true radial path intersecting the center of the drive spindle. The azimuth of the head is next adjusted by acting on the second point to pivot the sled about the first point until the desired azimuth angle is obtained.

A web transport apparatus including a simplified mount for a web-supporting roller, providing the axis of such roller with two degrees of freedom of movement. The simplified roller mount comprises an elongated, substantially planar, flexure member having a stiffening rib located along its longitudinal axis to limit flex of the member to movement about its longitudinal axis. A pin is supported by the flexure member. The pin lies substantially in the plane of the flexure member with the longitudinal axis of the pin perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the flexure member. The web-supporting roller is carried, for example by a yoke supported on the pin for movement with a first degree of freedom about the longitudinal axis of the pin and with a second degree of freedom about the longitudinal axis of the flexure member.

An electrostatic reproduction machine with a photosensitive member on which latent electrostatic images of an original being reproduced are made following charging of the member. A transparent platen supports the original with one or more lamps being provided to flash illuminate the original resting on the platen. The light image produced is transmitted by an optical system to an image frame of a moving photosensitive member to discharge the same selectively in accordance with the original. A movable optical system is provided to permit the light image to be projected onto and move with the moving photosensitive member to reduce image smear. The photosensitive member includes a perforation to define the location of the image frame. Exposure of the image frame with illumination of the flash lamps is timed by sensing an image of the perforation at the platen.

To register a sheet within a plane, a sheet registration means is provided comprising a flap formed on the sheet for resiliently biasing registration edge elements of the sheet against fixed locating pins. A total of no more and no less than three registration edge elements of the sheet are engaged by the locating pins to provide exact location of the sheet in its proper orientation within the plane.

A color balanced scratch suppressing projection apparatus for color transparencies includes an objective lens having a rectangular aperture and defining first and second conjugate planes. An integrating bar having a rectangular cross section and first and second end faces is located with its first end face adjacent the first conjugate plane of the objective lens. A condenser lens, disposed between the first conjugate plane and the first end face of the integrating bar forms an image of the rectangular aperture on the second end face of the bar. The linear dimensions of the image of the rectangular aperture are an even multiple of the dimensions of the second end face. In one embodiment of the invention, the projection apparatus is a color transparency scanner, a flying spot light source such as a CRT is located at the second conjugate plane of the objective lens, and a plurality of color photosensors are located at the second end face of the integrating bar. In an alternative embodiment, the projection apparatus is a color projection printer, a photosensitive print medium is located at the second conjugate plane of the objective lens, and a plurality of colored light sources are located at the second end of the integrating bar.

A film cartridge for enclosing a photosensitive film disk within a light-tight chamber defined by opposed walls which are sealed together to encapsulate the film disk. When the cartridge is positioned in opening apparatus, force-applying members inserted through passages in one of the walls of the cartridge are moved into contact with the opposed wall. Continued movement of the members displaces the opposed wall sufficiently to rupture it and/or a seal joining the walls. A wall-separating member of the opening apparatus is inserted into the rupture and moved between the opposed walls to extend the rupture and space the walls by a distance sufficient to permit the film disk to be removed from the cartridge.

Web tracking apparatus for a flexible, closed loop web moving in a closed loop path defined by two or more cylindrical, hard surface supports mounted on a frame and having substantially parallel longitudinal axes which are substantially perpendicular to a plane passing through the respective midpoints of the supports. Included are at least two laterally constraining web supports, at least one of which is a passive positional lateral constraint and includes a cylindrical web-engaging surface which presents substantially no resistance to lateral movement of the moving web, and edge guides mounted adjacent to the cylindrical surface in a predetermined spatial relation to the frame, and having spaced web engaging portions fixed a distance apart which corresponds substantially to width of the web for engaging the edges of the moving web.
