Sterically hindered phosphoramidates such as N,N&prime;-bis&lsqb;di-(2,6-xylenoxy)phosphinyl&rsqb;piperazine are prepared by the reaction of a sterically hindered diaryl chlorophosphate, such as di-(2,6-xylyl) chlorophosphate, with a basic nitrogen compound containing at least two basic N&mdash;H groups, preferably a heterocyclic compound such as piperazine, in a predominantly liquid, solvent-free reaction mixture. The reaction may be conducted in the melt or in the presence of a non-solvent carrier, typically an aliphatic hydrocarbon. An excess of the basic nitrogen compound is employed as an acid acceptor.

A novel process is disclosed for the preparation of polyester carbonates containing both carboxylate and carbonate groups. The process is based on the making of a mixed polyanhydride ester of a dibasic acid which is reacted with a dihydroxy compound to form a hydroxy containing intermediate that is subsequently transformed into a polyester carbonate by means of a carbonate forming reagent.

A method is provided for making polyetherimides involving the reaction of aromatic bis(ether anhydride)s and organic diamines in the presence of a phenolic solvent. The resulting polyetherimide-phenolic solvent mixture can be employed as a wire coating enamel.
