A switching system for routing information packets that can simultaneously receive a variety of packet formats. The packet formats include electronic packet transmissions, optical wave division multiplexed data (WDM) with a single frame consisting of a plurality of packets to be sent to a common output line, with each packet traveling on a separate wavelength, WDM packets where the header of an individual packet travels on a wavelength different from the remainder of the packet (i.e. the payload) and the payload either travels on a single wavelength or is subdivided into a plurality of sub-packets with each sub-packet carried on a separate wavelength, and the like. The system includes input devices, a scheduling unit, a switching unit; and variable delay line units. A deconcentrator in the packet switching system creates a minimum gap between packets.

The disclosed interconnect structures and switches support a wide variety of applications including supercomputer interconnects, LAN switches, IP and ATM switches, telephony central office switching, video on demand servers, interconnects for mainframe database servers, high-speed workstation interconnects, and many others that are known to those having ordinary skill in the art.

Multiple-path wormhole interconnect

A network or interconnect structure which includes a plurality of nodes which are interconnected within a hierarchical multiple level structure. The level of each node is determined by the position of the node within the structure and data messages move from node to node from a source level to a destination level. Each node within the interconnect structure is capable of receiving simultaneous data messages at its input ports from any other node and the receiving node is able to transmit each of the received data messages through its output ports to separate nodes in the interconnect structure to one or more levels below the level of the receiving node.

Scalable apparatus and method for increasing throughput in multiple level minimum logic networks using a plurality of control lines

An interconnect structure and method of communicating messages on the interconnect structure assists high priority messages to travel through the interconnect structure at a faster rate than normal or low priority messages. An interconnect structure includes a plurality of nodes with a plurality of interconnect lines selectively coupling the nodes in a hierarchical multiple-level structure. Data moves from an uppermost source level to a lowermost destination level. Nodes in the structure are arranged in columns and levels. Data wormholes through the structure and, in a given time-step, data always moves from one column to an adjacent column and while remaining on the same level or moving down to a lower level. When data moves down a level, an additional bit of the target output is fixed so data exiting from the bottom of the structure arrives at the proper target output port.

Scaleable interconnect structure utilizing quality-of-service handling

An interconnect structure substantially improves operation of an information concentrator through usage of single-bit routing through control cells using a control signal. The interconnect structure and operating technique support wormhole routing and flow of messages. Message packets are always buffered within the structure and never discarded, so that any packet that enters the structure is guaranteed to exit. In one example, the interconnect structure includes a ribbon of interconnect lines connecting a plurality of nodes in nonintersecting paths. The ribbon of interconnect lines winds through a plurality of levels from the source level to the destination level. The number of turns of a winding decreases from the source level to the destination level. The interconnect structure further includes a plurality of columns formed by interconnect lines coupling the nodes across the ribbon in cross-section through the windings of the levels.

Scaleable wormhole-routing concentrator

A scalable low-latency switch extends the functionality of a multiple level minimum logic interconnect structure for usage in computers of all types, networks and communication systems. The multiple level minimum logic interconnect structure employs a data flow technique based on timing and positioning of messages moving through the structure. The scalable low-latency switch is distributed throughout multiple nodes in the structure so that a supervisory controller providing a global control function and complex logic structures are avoided while the interconnect structure operates as a &ldquo;deflection&rdquo; or &ldquo;hot potato&rdquo; system in which processing and storage overhead at each node is reduced. The interconnect structure using the scalable low-latency switch employs a method of achieving wormhole routing through an integrated circuit chip by a novel procedure for inserting messages into the chip. Rather than simultaneously inserting a message into each unblocked node on the outer cylinder at every angle, messages are inserted simultaneously into two columns A and B only if an entire message fits between A and B. Messages are inserted into column,at time,Messages are inserted into column,at time t,&plus;t,, where time t,is the time for a first bit of a message to move from column,to column,on the top level. Messages are inserted into column,at time t,&plus;2t,, and so forth. The strategy prevents the first bit of one message from colliding with an interior bit of another message already in the switch. Contention between entire messages is addressed by resolving the contention between the first bit only so that messages wormhole through many cells.

Scaleable low-latency switch for usage in an interconnect structure

In general a non-reloadable syringe has been provided wherein the plunger unit thereof is permitted to be withdrawn for purposes of loading the syringe and permitted to be urged forwardly to discharge the contents of the syringe. However, means are provided whereby subsequent retraction of the plunger assembly is inhibited to prevent further loading and use of the syringe.
