An apparatus for use in a railway train simulator includes a control station which has a first microcomputer for receiving and transmitting, via a conventional transmission protocol, train simulation signals to a second microcomputer. The second microcomputer provides master control for the apparatus. The second microcomputer is adapted to link with and operate from multiple control stations and multiple computer control terminals. Information is provided in an enhanced manner through one or more color graphics terminals, plotters and printers. Displays of simulated trains and track selections can be displayed at different, selectable scales.

A system includes an interface through which actual train operating data can be transferred from a recording medium, such as a magnetic tape, into a train simulator. The date contents of the magnetic tape are generated from real-time data obtained on-board an operating locomotive. An apparatus for monitoring the operation of a railroad train includes two on-board units which collect and utilize data for ultimate transfer to a portable unit which can be carried onto and off of the railroad train. One of these on-board units operates under microcomputer control to compute speed, acceleration/deceleration, and distance traveled data and to store such computred data for subsequent transfer to the portable unit. The other on-board unit acquires additional data under separate microcomputer control. This data acquisition retrieves either binary or analog data, or both, and stores it in the acquiring on-board unit for later transfer to a separate memory in the other on-board unit for subsequent transfer to the portable unit. Power failure detection circuits are also implemented to insure the microcomputers are initiated in respective determinate states.

A respective microcomputer-based dynamic braking proportioning unit is disposed on each locomotive of a group of locomotives of a train consist. Each unit is connected to the brake setup and brake control wires of a trainline communicating with all of the locomotives, and each unit is connected to the dynamic braking equipment of its respective locomotive. Each unit includes two data entry mechanisms, such as switches, by which the respective microcomputer is advised of the total number of locomotives and of a unique number identifying the respective locomotive within the group. From the two signals from the trainline and the total locomotive and unique locomotive identification data, the respective microcomputer determines and outputs appropriate dynamic brake equipment control signals for the respective locomotive. These control signals are generated so that not all of the locomotives necessarily need to be placed in a dynamic braking mode for all levels of total dynamic braking required, thereby allowing any unneeded locomotive to be operated at a lower fuel consuming power level.

A microprocessor controlled apparatus monitors a plurality of flow meters for computing and displaying the flow rates detected by each flow meter, the total volumes accumulated through each flow meter, the sum of the current flow rates for the flow meters, and the sum of the total volumes for the flow meters. The information from which the computations are made and the system operating parameters are transferred to a non-volatile memory in response to electronic means for detecting when a power outage or interruption occurs.

An apparatus for monitoring the motion of a railroad train includes an on-board unit which computes the speed, acceleration/deceleration, and distance traveled events of the train and stores such computed data for retention by a non-volatile memory after a power interruption or outage occurs. The apparatus also includes a portable unit to which the on-board unit, or the data retaining memory thereof, can be connected for conducting data transfers from the on-board unit memory to the portable unit. Once stored in the portable unit, the information can be formated and displayed as a history of the train operation for management and maintenance personnel, for example.
