A method and sensor or sensor subsystem permit improved evaporative leak detection in an automotive fuel system. The sensor or sensor subsystem computes temperature-compensated pressure values, thereby eliminating or reducing false positive or other adverse results triggered by temperature changes in the fuel tank. The temperature-compensated pressure measurement is then available for drawing an inference regarding the existence of a leak with reduced or eliminated false detection arising as a result of temperature fluctuations.

A purge valve for an evaporative emission control system. The purge valve includes an actuator, a valve body, and a valve closure member disposed in the valve body. The actuator is disposed along a longitudinal axis, and includes an electromagnetic coil having a hollow core extending along the longitudinal axis, a stator disposed in the hollow core, and a permanent magnet armature disposed proximate the stator. The valve body is disposed proximate the actuator, and defines a flow passage extending along the longitudinal axis. When the coil is unenergized, the permanent magnet armature is magnetically attracted to the stator, and the valve closure member is spaced from the armature by a lost motion distance.

A pressure regulator is associated with a solenoid-operated valve that is operated by a pulse waveform at a fundamental frequency substantially greater than the frequency response of the valve mechanism. This substantially attenuates solenoid pulsations and applies a predetermined pressure differential across the valve mechanism to accomplish improved flow control accuracy. The invention is especially advantageous for purging fuel vapor to an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle.

Regulated linear purge solenoid valve

A valve, system, and method for controlling evaporative emissions of a volatile fuel. The system includes a fuel vapor collection canister, an isolation valve, and a fuel tank. The isolation valve includes a housing defining a chamber, a diaphragm movable with respect to the housing between a first configuration and a second configuration, and a coil spring biasing the diaphragm toward the first configuration. The housing includes an interior partition that defines an aperture and separates the housing into first and second sections, a first port that is in fuel vapor communication with the fuel vapor collection canister, and a second port. In the first configuration, the diaphragm occludes the aperture, divides the chamber into three sub-chambers, and substantially prevents fuel vapor flow between the first and second ports. In the second configuration, the diaphragm divides the chamber into two sub-chambers and permits generally unrestricted fuel vapor flow between the first and second ports. The coil spring includes a first end that engages the housing and a second end that engages the diaphragm. The fuel tank is in fuel vapor communication with the second port of the isolation valve. The fuel tank isolation valve can also include a check valve that equalizes pressure between the first and second ports to relieve excess vacuum in the fuel tank.

An exhaust gas recirculation EGR valve is provided. The exhaust gas recirculation valve has a housing, a closure member, and an electrical actuator. A test includes an initialization, or stabilization, phase during which a differential between pressure in the evaporative emission space and atmospheric pressure is created, and then varied, over time, within a range of differential pressures suitable for performing a leak detection test. This varying of pressure differential alternately increases the created pressure differential above a nominal pressure differential and decreases the created pressure differential below the nominal pressure differential. The leak detection test is then performed.
