The invention relates to a base comprising a closed cell foam core sheet having a closed cell foam layer with a density gradient between the center of the core and the surfaces of the core. The invention also relates to a method of making such a base by adding a first concentration of a first blowing agent to a first polymer to form a first mixture, adding a second concentration of a second blowing agent to a second polymer to form a second mixture, and extruding the mixtures to form the closed cell foam core sheet. The invention also relates to a method of making such a closed cell foam core sheet base comprising the steps of adding a blowing agent to a polymer to form a mixture, melting the mixture, extruding the mixture from a die, and rapidly quenching the mixture against a high heat transfer surface.

A process for improving adhesion of a thermoplastic polymeric resin on a casting surface by using an electrostatic pinning wire in conjunction with a conductive shield. The method includes the steps of extrusion casting a sheet of molten polymer from a die, directing the cast sheet onto a moving, chilled and electrically grounded casting surface to solidify the polymer and extending a conductive wire transverse to a longitudinal axis of the sheet with the sheet between the wire and the chilled surface before the sheet contacts the chilled surface. An elongated conductive uninsulated shield parallel to the wire with the wire between the shield and the sheet is provided and a bias voltage is applied to the wire and the shield. The bias voltage of the wire is in the range of 6 to 15 kV, and the bias voltage of the shield is adjusted to be at least 5 kV lower than the voltage of the wire to maintain a desired current flowing from the wire and the shield to the sheet.

Improved electrostatic pinning method

In the manufacture of a paint-coated stretchable film which is useful as a covering for automobile panels and other articles, a stretchable carrier film is formed by extruding a thermoplastic polymer composition onto a heat resistant temporary carrier film. The extruded layer is coated with paint or other layers and dried initially at a moderate temperature and finally at a high temperature which exceeds the heat deformation temperature of the stretchable carrier film but not of the heat resistant temporary carrier film. This shortens drying time and/or reduces residual solvents in the dried layers. The temporary carrier film, which is later stripped away, resists deformation of the laminate as it is drawn under tensile stress through the coating and high temperature drying stages.

There are disclosed a novel PVF.sub.2 film of beta phase crystalline structure, predominantly, and a method for making it. The beta phase is achieved by first exposing a surface of an insulating polymeric support to an A.C. corona discharge treatment, and then casting molten PVF.sub.2 onto that exposed surface while chilling the cast PVF.sub.2.
