A multimode optical fiber transmission system that employs an optical fiber with at least one modal-conditioning fiber is disclosed. The system includes a single-mode transmitter that generates modulated light having a wavelength between 800 nm and 1600 nm; an optical receiver configured to receive and detect the modulated light; a multimode optical fiber that defines an optical path between the single-mode transmitter and the optical receiver, the multimode optical fiber having a core with a diameter Dand a refractive index profile configured to optimally transmit light at a nominal wavelength of 850 nm; and at least one modal-conditioning fiber operably disposed in the optical path to perform at least one of modal filtering and modal converting of the optical modulated light.

Multimode optical transmission system employing modal-conditioning fiber

Disclosed is an optical fiber which includes a core including silica with a core diameter and having at least two dopants, a maximum relative refractive index delta of at least 0.7% and an alpha value in the range of 1.9-2.2. The core has a refractive index profile configured to transmit light in a multimode propagation at a first wavelength &#x3bb;in the range of 800-1100 nm and to propagate light in a LP01 mode at a second wavelength &#x3bb;. The second wavelength &#x3bb;is greater than 1200 nm. The optical fiber is structured to have a LP01 mode field diameter in the range of 8.5-12.5 &#x3bc;m at 1310 nm.

Optical fiber for both multimode and single-mode operation and transmission system therefor

An optical fiber cable for bi-directional communication of optical signals is disclosed. The optical fiber cable has a primary multimode optical fiber with an alpha value of &#x3b1; and is concatenated to a compensating fiber with an alpha value &#x3b1;, wherein 1.2&#x2264;(&#x3b1;'&#x2212;&#x3b1;)&#x2264;&#x2212;0.1. The optical fiber cable has a reach between 50 m and 800 m. Modules that employ a plurality of concatenated primary and compensating optical fibers are also disclosed. A bi-directional optical fiber communications system that operates at two different wavelengths is also disclosed.

Optical fiber cables and modules with modal disperson compensation

Fiber optic assemblies and systems for high-speed data-rate optical transport systems are disclosed that allow for optically interconnecting active assemblies to a trunk cable in a polarization-preserving manner. The fiber optic assembly includes at least first and second multifiber connectors each having respective pluralities of first and second ports that define respective pluralities of at least first and second groups of at least two ports each. The first and second multifiber connectors are capable of being disposed so that the at least first and second groups of ports are located on respective termination sides of each ferrule. The fiber optic assembly also has a plurality of optical fibers that connect the first and second ports according to a pairings method that maintains polarity between transmit and receive ports of respective active assemblies. At least one of the first and second groups are optically connected without flipping the fibers.

Optical interconnection assemblies and systems for high-speed data-rate optical transport systems

Fiber optic connection assemblies for rearranging sets of fiber optic signals arranged in one parallel optical configuration into one or more different parallel optical configurations are disclosed. In one arrangement, two (2) data transmission pairs are connected between one multi-fiber connector from each of two connector sets in a first parallel optical configuration using a common set of fiber positions for each multi-fiber connector. Another two (2) data transmission pairs are connected to the common set of fiber positions of a multi-fiber connector from the first connector set, but are connected to other fiber positions of the multi-fiber connectors of the second connector set, using fiber positions that are not used by the other two (2) data transmission pairs. In this manner, cabling complexity can be reduced with increased signal density within fiber optic cables having a multi-fiber configuration.

Polarity configurations for parallel optics data transmission, and related apparatuses, components, systems, and methods

Fiber optic assemblies and systems for high-speed data-rate optical transport systems are disclosed that allow for optically interconnecting active assemblies to a trunk cable in a polarization-preserving manner. The fiber optic assembly includes at least first and second multifiber connectors each having respective pluralities of first and second ports that define respective pluralities of at least first and second groups of at least two ports each. The first and second multifiber connectors are capable of being disposed so that the at least first and second groups of ports are located on respective termination sides of each ferrule. The fiber optic assembly also has a plurality of optical fibers that connect the first and second ports according to a pairings method that maintains polarity between transmit and receive ports of respective active assemblies. At least one of the first and second groups are optically connected without flipping the fibers, and at least one of the first and second groups are optically connected by flipping the fibers.

Optical interconnection methods for high-speed data-rate optical transport systems are disclosed that optically interconnect active assemblies to a fiber optic cable in a polarization-preserving manner. The methods include defining active-assembly-wise connector ports that connect to active assembly transmit and receive ports, and defining or establishing a pairings method between the active-assembly-wise connector ports. In a first optical interconnection assembly, an active-assembly-wise port is optically connected to a cable-wise port. In the second optical interconnection assembly, the cable-wise port that corresponds to the connected cable-wise port in the first optical interconnection assembly is optically connected to a select active-assembly-wise port as defined by the pairings method. The optical connection process is then repeated from the second to the first optical interconnection assembly. The optical interconnection acts are repeated until all of the active-assembly-wise ports are connected.

Optical interconnection methods for high-speed data-rate optical transport systems

Cables and an apparatus and methods for making cables having at least one messenger section, transmission sections, and at least two series of connecting webs. At least one series of webs can be intermittently formed. The messenger section can include a messenger wire for supporting the cable, and the transmission sections can include electrical/electronic and/or optical transmission components. A method of making cables may include the steps of pulling cable components through a melt cavity having a molten jacketing material therein; defining at least three cable sections by coating the cable components with the molten jacketing material; monolithically forming at least two series of connecting webs made of the molten jacketing material between each cable section during a web-forming mode; and defining intermittent webs by forming longitudinal gaps between the webs of at least one of the series of webs during a gap-forming mode by switching between the web-forming and gap-forming modes with respect to the at least one series of webs. The apparatus includes a melt cavity associated with a die orifice having web-forming sections, and gap forming parts associated with the web-forming sections, the gap forming parts being operative to block the flow of the cable jacketing material for forming gaps defining the webs.

Self-supporting cables and an apparatus and methods for making the same

Cables and an apparatus and methods for making cables having at least one messenger section, transmission sections, and at least two series of connecting webs. At least one series of webs can be intermittently formed. Disclosed is a compensating cable adapted to be used in combination with an elevator cab, counterweight, hoist rope and traveling cable. The compensating cable is composed of a sheath, at least one elongated strength member such as a link chain or stranded wire rope, made from metal or other materials of high tensile strength disposed in the sheath and the volume of the sheath not otherwise occupied by the strength member substantially occupied by a mixture of metal particles and plastic.
