A method for processing one or more manufactured parts is provided. The method includes generating a number of tool paths corresponding to a feature to be added to the one or more manufactured parts. Each of the tool paths has an effect on a respective one of the representative manufactured parts. The method further includes clustering the tool paths into a number of clusters based on the respective effect and a tolerance of the feature being added to the representative manufactured part and processing a manufactured part using one of the tool paths, which corresponds to a respective subpopulation in which the manufactured part lies.

Method for processing manufactured parts

A method for defining a numerically controlled (NC) tool path on a identified region of a solid computer model is disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, the method includes identifying boundary points so as to bound the identified region. The boundary points are processed so as to generate a plurality of bounding curves, wherein the bounding curves are generated so as to conform to a surface of the identified region. The NC tool path is then generated in a manner conforming to the bounding curves.

Method and system for generating numerically controlled tool paths on a solid model

A method ( ) for manufacturing a precision part ( ) utilizing a non-precision fixture ( ). The non-precision fixture is precisely measured ( ) and modeled in a CAD program ( ) together with a model of the part ( ). The part model is nested ( ) into the fixture model, and a transformation matrix describing the movement of a coordinate system of the part during the step of nesting is recorded ( ). The transformation matrix may then be used to transform ( ) a tool path that had been developed for the originally designed shape of the fixture. Accordingly, imprecision in the location of a part within an imprecisely measured fixture may be accounted for during subsequent manufacturing operations.

Method of manufacturing precision parts with non-precision fixtures

A method for identifying and characterizing shape variations in parts. Measurements are taken of a population of parts and the shapes of the parts are expressed as a function having a plurality of coefficients. Discrete or function error maps are developed from the coefficients and a principal components analysis is performed on the error maps to identify the principal components of variation of the parts. The parts may be grouped into sub-populations representing ranges of variation along each of the principal components of variation, and downstream processes may be controlled differently for each sub-population. In one embodiment, a typical (re-generated) part shape is identified along multiple principal components of variation, and a tool path is controlled to be responsive to the typical part shape. Information regarding the principal components of variation may further be used to revise upstream manufacturing processes to advantageously affect the distribution of error in subsequently manufactured parts.

Method for identifying and applying families of part shape variations

A method and system for dual laser shock peening an article are provided. The method allows for defining a spot pattern comprising a plurality of spots on a first surface of the article to be peened. The method further allows for defining a spot pattern comprising a plurality of spots on a second surface of the article to be peened. The first and second surfaces comprise mutually opposite surfaces relative to one another. Each one of the respective spots on the second surface is arranged to correspond to a respective spot on the first surface and comprising a plurality of matched pair of spots. A generating step allows for generating dual laser beams being respectively aligned to simultaneously impinge on each respective matched pair of spots.

Dual laser shock peening

A system and method for numerical control processing of an in-process part. A mathematical mapping is generated which approximates the deformation of the in-process part as measured against a nominal model. The mapping is applied to nominal NC tool paths to generate modified tool paths that travel in the distorted coordinate space of the in-process part. A result is that local features may be machined into the in-process parts in reasonable locations, and non contact measurement systems as well as surface finishing systems can travel at a more constant distance from the surface of the in-process part.
