Bundles of presized wood veneer strips are prepared for longitudinal edge adhesive by vertical alignment of the veneer strip face planes on a horizontal machine bed surface between open clamp jaws. Upon satisfactory alignment of the strip edges on the bed surface, the clamp jaws are closed on the bundle and translated from the bed surface to an adhesive transfer roll transverse plane. As the roll traverses the bundle length, adhesive is coated upon the veneer strip bottom edges. After completing the adhesive application pass, the clamp jaws are opened on manual command to release the veneer strip bundle for manual inversion. While the clamp jaws are open, the adhesive transfer roll is returned to the starting position. The clamp jaws are manually returned to the bed surface position and the opposite edge set of the inverted bundle is aligned against the bed surface and the process is repeated. After the adhesive has dried, individual strip pairs are joined in a common plane along longitudinal edges under simultaneous compressive pressure and adhesive curing heat.

Bundles of presized wood veneer strips are prepared for longitudinal edge adhesive by vertical alignment of the veneer strip face planes on a horizontal machine bed surface between open clamp jaws. Upon satisfactory alignment of the strip edges on the bed surface, the clamp jaws are closed on the bundle and translated from the bed surface to a horizontal adhesive transfer plane. An adhesive transfer carriage traverses the bundle length to coat the veneer strip bottom edges by a rotatively driven wheel having a lower chordal segment immersed within an adhesive reservoir. After completing the adhesive application pass, the clamp jaws are opened on manual command to release the veneer strip bundle to manual inversion. While the clamp jaws are open, the adhesive transfer carriage is returned to the starting position with a non-rotating adhesive application wheel. Neither the adhesive application wheel nor the adhesive reservoir are structurally secured to the transfer carriage frame to facilitate respective isolation and solvent immersion for cleaning.

Flocs of papermaking fiber are dispersed by a multiplicity of white-water jets directed into a papermachine headbox prior to the slice opening. Jet direction is oriented counter-flow to the papermaking stock slice flow to create maximum turbulence, fluid shear and energy dissipation. Such jets issue from nozzle orifices in the slice profiling bar and are supplied with fluid through a two-stage manifold system. To preserve vertical plane pliability of the conduit-connected profiling bar, section area of the profiling bar between nozzles is minimized. Self sealing, push fit, fluid conduit connections with the jet nozzle orifices are made with flexible conduits between a sectional bar type of intermediate header and the profiling bar.

Large, paper mill reels of product are protectively wrapped for shipment by capping the reel ends with a header sheet of larger area than that reel end face circle to pleat a flange portion of the header sheet onto the cylindrical surface of reel with a resilient planar element having a freely suspended, circumferentially expansible aperture drawn coaxially over the header sheet and reel to wipe the header sheet flange onto the reel cylindrical surface.

Method and apparatus for wrapping paper rolls

Wood veneer strips are butt joined end-to-end for assembly of an indefinite length strip or sheet suitable for reeling. The splicing apparatus clamps the veneer strip ends to be joined in longitudinal planar alignment for trimming by two spaced shear knives having parallel cutting planes. Following the shear cut, a reciprocating carriage for one bed knife to which one veneer strip is clamped is withdrawn from the corresponding cutting plane to permit movement of all shear knife structure from between the carriage and the other, fixed position bed knife without retracting the shear knife edges back past the bed knife edges. The reciprocating carriage is then moved along with its corresponding bed knife and clamped veneer strip into abutment with the fixed position bed knife and respective strip edge where lap splice material is laid across the joint and cured in place under heat and pressure.

Method of using a veneer butt-end splicer

A machine for surface finishing wood veneer feeds the veneer to a grinding drum positioned over a rigid bed plate. A continuous loop feed belt carries the veneer to and away from the bed plate but passes thereunder to permit a rigid gap between the bed plate and the drum grinding surface. The drum is carried on a swing arm that is independently driven about an arc between a working position and a retracted, repair position.

The characteristic profile of a paper web is adjusted on the fourdrinier by means of a number of fluid spray stations positioned across the papermachine. Each spray station is provided with two or more fan spray nozzles of different flow capacity oriented to impact the pond with fluid along a common line. Flow to each nozzle is binary controlled with respective binary command, full flow valves. By discrete manipulation of valve selection, total flow rate to the web may be adjusted without flow throttling and consequent impact velocity variations.

Method and apparatus for leveling the cross-direction profile of stock

Uniform embossing on both sides of a web of paper may be obtained in a single pass through an embossing nip by interposing a thin film of tough, resilient material in the form of a continuous belt of approximately 0.050 inch thickness or less between the embossing roll and the backup roll. Stationary guide members, which may be combined with air bearings, are provided to insure proper tracking of the belt.

Corrugated board is formed by heating the plastic coated bonding surface of a liner web to a plasticizing temperature against the Teflon coated surface of a rotating heating drum and, while plasticized, fused against the flute crests of a corrugated medium web. The fusion bonded joints are set in the nip of a chilled pressure roll for stripping of the board unit from the corrugating roll surface. Speed of the single-face unit is primarily controlled as a function of the magnitude of angular wrap of the liner web about the heating drum. Temperature of the bonding surface of the liner web is sensed upon removal from the heating drum for the purpose of speed trim adjustment.

Method and apparatus for fabricating corrugated board from poly-coated

The angular position of a wrap control roll about a paper web preheating roll is remotely adjusted to any one of a plurality of predetermined set positions by an index control over the adjustment power train. The index conrol comprises a remote positioned, console mounted rotary switch having contact positions corresponding to the predetermined wrap control roll set positions. Cooperative switches mounted in an adjustment drive follower mechanism continue the circuit continuity to a solenoid activated drive motor reversing switch. A breaker unit within the follower mechanism is directly driven by the adjustment power train to open the motor switch when the breaker unit is correctly aligned with the desired set position.

Angular indexing mechanism

In a sheet corrugating machine used to fabricate corrugated paper board from rolls of sheet stock, the formed sheet is held tightly to the undulating surface of one corrugating roll between the corrugating nip and a liner sheet application nip by a vacuum system within the corrugating roll. The corrugating roll vacuum system comprises apertures through the roll shell within the corrugation valleys. Such apertures communicate with longitudinal conduits disposed about the internal periphery of the roll shell and extended through one axial end of the roll. A stationary, sliding seal vacuum box evacuates only those conduits rotatively passing through the desired arc thereby leaving the roll journals free to simultaneously conduct roll heating steam therethrough.
