A method and system for monitoring performance of a program using global metric variables to provide the support in an symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) system. A Java virtual machine (Jvm) either calls the profiler whenever bytes are allocated or provides an interface to allow the profiler to determine the value of the change in the metric for the current thread. The profiler then applies the changes to a metric for the current thread. Alternatively, per processor data areas are maintained for storing per processor metric values. Whenever a thread switch occurs or there is a request for the metric on a specified thread, an operating system kernel updates the thread level metric values with changes in the values per processor metrics.

Method and system for apportioning changes in metric variables in an symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) environment

A user may specify a vector of metrics to be used while profiling a program. The vector of metrics may optionally be thread-relative. In response to a notification of an occurrence of the current event, a thread-relative elapsed metric is computed by: determining a current thread; retrieving a stored reference metric for the preceding event of the current thread; obtaining a current reference metric; and computing the thread-relative elapsed metric as a difference between the current reference metric and the stored reference metric. In order to prevent the generation of redundant metric information, the information associated with the vector of metrics maybe placed into the trace records in several different space-saving formats.

Processing events during profiling of an instrumented program

The present invention is directed to a system, method and instructions for handling path flow exception and finalization processing in an object oriented programming language. Initially, each instrumentation method is checked for a code to indicated an exception being thrown. A hook is inserted before the exception code and identifies the method throwing the exception. Methods must also be checked for exception tables. When an exception table is found, then a hook is inserted at the entry point of each exception handler for every entry in the exception table. This hook identifies the method which catches the exception.

System and method for injecting hooks into Java classes to handle exception and finalization processing

A method and system for detecting memory leaks in an object-oriented environment during real-time trace processing is provided. During the profiling of a program executing in a data processing system, a profiler processes events caused by the execution of the program, and the profiler maintains a profile data structure containing execution-related metrics for the program. The execution-related metrics may include object allocation and deallocation metrics that are associated with object processing initiated on behalf of an executing method. An object allocator allocates objects during the execution of the program and modifies object allocation metrics in the profile data structure. An object deallocator, such as a garbage collector, deallocates objects during the execution of the program and modifies object deallocation metrics in the profile data structure. The object allocation metrics and the object deallocation metrics may be compared to identify memory leaks.

Method and system for memory leak detection in an object-oriented environment during real-time trace processing

A method and system are disclosed for operating an object-oriented environment within a computer system. The execution of the object-oriented environment is initiated. A first memory location is allocated in a memory area within the object-oriented environment for storing an object. A second memory location is allocated in the memory area with the allocation of the first memory location for storing a persistence indicator. The persistence indicator indicates a point during the execution of the object-oriented environment at which the allocation of the first memory location occurred. A total number of bytes of the memory area which had been allocated during the execution of the object-oriented environment when the allocation of the first memory location occurred is stored as the persistence indicator.

A method and apparatus for instrumenting garbage collection in a data processing system is provided. During garbage collection, a pass is made through the object heap and a plurality of heap data is retrieved and written to a trace file. The data may include the type of object, the size of the object on the heap, the class of the object, if appropriate, and a plurality of pointers, including live set pointers, and one or more tags representing attributes that may be associated with the particular object. The instrumentation may controlled to occur at a preselected phase of the garbage collection process. Additionally, a user may dynamically initiate a garbage collection instrumentation if the user determines that an event has occurred during the operation of the data processing system about which the user wishes further data.

Method of instrumenting garbage collection generating a trace file making a single pass analysis of object heap

The present invention is directed to a system and method of changing a cultural profile of a program, or application, while the program is executing in an information handling system. The system and method of the present invention enable programs to be globalized/localized to support many different countries and cultures. A user may dynamically change a program's cultural profile to a different cultural profile without having to reboot the system. The profile change may be accomplished through the use of a drag and drop interface. Different aspects, or windows, within a program may utilize different cultural profiles, and a cultural profile change to one aspect, or window, of the program does not affect the other aspects of the program. The present invention allows programs to be customized to support any culture or combination of cultures. This is accomplished through the use of a drag and drop interface, where cultural profiles, referred to as locale objects, are dropped onto windows within a program. When a locale object is dropped on a window, a message is sent to the window, and the window then updates its cultural profile information accordingly.

The present invention is directed to a system and method for dynamically managing cultural profiles within an information handling system. Cultural profiles may be created, modified, or deleted without having to reboot the information handling system. The cultural profile changes are immediately effective in the system. A user may dynamically change a program's cultural profile to a new or modified cultural profile without having to reboot the system. The system and method of the present invention enable programs to be globalized/localized to support many different countries and cultures. A user may define a new program profile based on an existing profile. This allows for substantial reuse of code, and saves time for the user because new cultural profiles do not have to be completely created from scratch. In addition, a user may modify or delete a currently existing program profile. The dynamic creation, modification, or deletion of cultural profiles is done by using a dynamically linked library, containing all system defined cultural profiles, in combination with a user locale file which is used to store newly defined cultural profiles, along with user modifications and deletions of existing cultural profiles.
