A variable grip blind rivet has a rivet body with a first shank adapted to be inserted into a hole in a workpiece and having an axial bore, and a flange at a first end of the first shank for abutting the workpiece when the first shank is inserted into the hole in the workpiece. A mandrel has a head, for engaging a second end of the first shank, and a second shank adapted to extend through the axial bore. The head has an abutment portion for abutting the first end of the first shank. At least one protrusion adjacent the abutment portion defines a recess for receiving the first end of the first shank during setting of the rivet.

Variable grip blind rivet

A variable grip blind rivet includes a tubular rivet body and a mandrel. The rivet body has a first shank, insertable into a hole in a workpiece, and a flange at a first end of the first shank for abutting the workpiece when so inserted. The mandrel has a head, for engaging a second end of the first shank, and a second shank adapted to extend through the axial bore of the rivet body. The head has an abutment portion for abutting the first end of the first shank, and the second shank has a first reduced diameter portion adapted to break when a predetermined tensile is loaded applied. At least one protrusion adjacent the abutment portion defines a recess for receiving the first end of the first shank during setting of the rivet.

A blind rivet assembly is provided. In another aspect, a blind rivet has ends that are received within countersinks in one or more workpieces and a mandrel head is completely pulled through the rivet without being severed from a mandrel stem. A further aspect includes a mandrel with an outwardly tapering shoulder.

A blind rivet setting tool (10) includes a front end (2) having an outer support barrel (4), an inner pulling mandrel (6) and a rivet flange contacting face (8). A portion of the outer support barrel (4) and a portion of the inner mandrel (6) are cut away along the length of the tool (10) extending from the rivet flange contacting face (8), to provide a cut-away face (12), a slot (14) extending from the rivet flange contacting face (8) of the outer support barrel (4) and comprising a first section (16) located in the outer support barrel (4) and sized to accept the mandrel of a blind rivet, a second section (18) located in the pulling mandrel (6) and sized to accept the mandrel of a blind rivet and a third section (34) located in the pulling mandrel (6) and sized to accept the pulling head of the mandrel of the blind rivet is formed along the length of the barrel (4) and pulling mandrel (6), open to the cut-away face (12) of the barrel (4) and pulling mandrel (6) and retaining means (20) is provided to retain a rivet in the slot (14).
