Computer-readable media and systems for communicating physical gestures as compressed data streams are provided. In particular, a technique is employed for generating replicated physical gestures on a user-interface display to visibly communicate sign language without transmitting information standard to typical video sessions, such as audio or video frames. In general, the technique entails the following steps: receiving coordinate representations of user-initiated physical gestures (e.g., hand movements); deciphering the received coordinate representations to identify corresponding motion patterns; and conveying the motion patterns to a presentation component for rendering. Rendering involves replicating the physical gestures by providing animations that carry out the motion patterns. The coordinate representations are generally received from a mobile device that captures physical gestures of a sender by employing a position-tracking interface. Upon capturing the physical gestures, the mobile device maps the coordinate representations to the physical gestures and records/transmits the coordinate representations at a high-speed frame rate.

Methods and systems for providing proximate-and-active-emergency-vehicle notifications to mobile-device users are provided. The emergency vehicle may become active, and its location and status may be received by a network element. A mobile-device user's location may also be received by a network element. It may be determined based on analyzing the location of the emergency vehicle and the location of the mobile-device user to provide the mobile-device user with a proximate-and-active-emergency-vehicle notification.

Notifying mobile-device users of emergency vehicles

A method, system, and computer-readable media are provided for adjusting one or more video parameters of a video communication session based on a type of use for the video communication session. At least one method includes detecting a use for a certain video communication session and applying a profile of video parameters to the session based on the use. The method further includes detecting a network constraint and adjusting one or more of the video parameters based on the network constraint.

Use-based adaptive video client for a bandwidth-constrained network

A mobile communications device, method, and medium are provided for enhanced video communications for hearing-impaired users. A hearing-impaired call mode can be selected by a user, causing the device to establish a hearing-impaired call mode configuration. Establishing a hearing-impaired call mode configuration can include disabling a microphone and speakers and enabling an adjustable camera. The adjustable camera can tilt, pan, change focus, and the like to maintain a region of interest within a viewing angle of the camera.

Differential planes for video I/O in a hearing impaired application

A method, system, and medium are provided for formatting video frames such that a region of interest is emphasized and the video frames can be encoded, communicated, and rendered without excessive processing burdens. A region of interest is identified in a video frame and a feature mask is created that represents the region of interest. The feature mask can be used to crop the video frame to remove background images that are not within the region of interest and the cropped video frame can be overlayed on a simulated background before being encoded and communicated to a display device.

Application specific video format

Methods and systems for a wireless communication device (WCD) to change a media session codec prior to handoff to a new wireless coverage area are presented. In particular, a WCD is served by a first wireless coverage area of a RAN, and is conducting a media session using a first codec. The WCD detects that it is about to be handed off to a second wireless coverage area, and transmits a request to a server to determine the capacity available to the WCD via the second wireless coverage area. If this capacity is less than the capacity request by the first codec, the WCD proactively renegotiates the media session to use a second codec that requires less capacity. The server may take various factors into account when responding to the WCD's query, including the sector loading of the second wireless coverage area, available capacity at a backhaul link between the RAN and a network, and/or a profile of the WCD.

Method and system for changing a media session codec before handoff in a wireless network

Media, systems, and methods are provided for evaluating a video processing technology based on subjective feedback. Videos from a plurality of sources for one or more subjective feedback targets are randomly selected. The selected videos with a video processing technology are processed, such that the selected videos include at least one impairment. The selected videos are transmitted to the one or more subjective feedback targets. Subjective feedback is received from the one or more subjective feedback targets regarding a perceptional aspect of the selected videos.
