A lance nozzle insert for a refractory lance for feeding an additive wire into a quantity of molten metal below the surface of the molten metal surface is made of a material comprising stabilized zirconium oxide and graphite substantially increasing the corrosion resistance of the lance nozzle insert.

A process and apparatus for feeding an additive to a molten metal in a vessel to achieve a uniform dispersion of the additive are provided. In one example, the outlet of the lance is positioned below the surface of the molten metal. The lance is moved with a reciprocating motion, so that the outlet of the lance moves below the surface of the molten metal. The additive is dispensed through the outlet of the lance along a path traversed by the outlet in the molten metal while the lance reciprocates.

Rotary lance

A refractory composition, particularly for application as a dry vibratable refractory for forming the wearable, disposable monolithic lining coating the permanent lining of a tundish or ladle used in molten metal casting processes is disclosed. The composition contains a refractory aggregate, a first bonding agent actuatable at temperatures in the range of from about 300.degree. F. to about 1000.degree. F. to cause the formation of interparticle bonds between aggregate particles, at least one second bonding agent actuatable at temperatures in the range of from about 1000.degree. F. to about 2500.degree. F. to cause further formation of interparticle bonds between aggregate particles, and, optionally, clay. The use of both first and second bonding agents enables installation of the refractory in hot practice, in which vessel preheat temperatures of up to about 2500.degree. F. are utilized.

A process for the preparation of high purity calcium titanate hydrates, particularly various forms of kassite, is disclosed. Calcium carbonate and titanium tetraisopropoxide are used as starting materials. The process utilizes a hydrothermal reaction step. Hydrates having both hexagonal form, wherein the particles have a platy morphology, and lath form, wherein the particles have a rodlike morphology are produceable according to the process. Particle morphology is determined by the choice of process parameters, especially the rate of heating during the hydrothermal reaction step. Kassite particles of the hexagonal plate form, which are useful as a high opacity paper coating pigment, are produced when the rate of heating is less than or equal to 1.5.degree.C./min. Faster rates of heating result in kassite particles of a lath form. These particles are useful as a reinforcing material in polymers and ceramics.

Particulate calcium carbonate or iron oxide pretreated with a fatty acid such as stearic acid or oleic acid is added to a cementitious product to improve its strength and resistance to water absorption and penetration. Dry, aqueous and nonaqueous methods of addition are employed.
