A portable, post slit decurler and high capacity stacker module for use with a machine, such as, a desktop page printer, includes a decurler that decurls prints after they have been slit into thirds, halves, or whole prints. The post slit decurler and high capacity stacker module sits in a receiving tray of a copier/printer and is separately powered or &ldquo;hard wired&rdquo; into the copier/printer.

An adjustable, pivoting paper tray that enhances the feeding of a full ream of shorter than standard size paper by a feed roll from the paper tray without encountering stack normal force relief impediments includes a half ream sized adjustable backstop. The backstop has floating or articulating fingers resting on the ream of paper in the paper tray that slide downward as each sheet is feed from the paper tray. This movement of fingers allows every sheet to be fed from the sheet stack.

A device that allows an operator to unload copy sheets from an output tray of a machine, keep the machine running, and maintain integrity of the copy sheet stack. The output tray is slid to the right with respect to the front of the machine to allow the operator to unload the copy sheet stack. When slid to the right, an `X-shelf` is unfolded to hold the stack of continual copy sheet output. After the tray is emptied, it is slid to the left and back into the original position. The sheets on the `X-shelf` fall into the output tray and the job continues uninterrupted.

A desktop page printer, such as suitable for printing MICR images, includes a slitter for cutting page-size prints into check-size documents as the page prints are emitted from the printing machine. The slitter can be bypassed by the installation of a side output tray which causes the paper path to be diverted from the slitter.

An end of media detection system is provided for a system which unrolls a media supply such as paper from a cylindrical core substrate. One (trailing) edge of the media is attached to the core substrate. As part of the media detection system, a shaft which is positioned within a pair of cradles supports the cylindrical core. One of the cradles houses a plastic slide, which in turn acts vertically on the actuator of a microswitch when the shaft is in place. The weight of the shaft and media roll acting on the microswitch keeps the microswitch in an inactive state, however, as the media on the roll is played out, at some point just before the media is exhausted the shaft is moved upward due to the adhesive attachment of the trail edge of the media to the core substrate. Movement of the shaft relieves the pressure on the actuator of the microswitch thereby actuating the microswitch to send a signal to a controller to stop rotation of the shaft. This prevents a situation where the sheet still attached to the core stalls at the end of media feed.

A high capacity envelope stacker accepts envelopes from a source in a planar configuration, pivots each envelope individually on either of its long edge axis so that it is stacked on its long edge, and then restrains the envelope on its two faces so that the stack of envelopes as a whole are stacked 1-N exactly as they arrive from the printer up to about 500 envelopes.

A gravity fed, 'load-while-run' envelope feeder places a high capacity envelope storage bin's long dimension against a printer which creates a small footprint. The feeder transfers the envelopes from the storage bin to a horizontal transporation area with the rotation of a motor driven blade to within access of the printer's feed rollers. The blade catches an envelope's flap to feed it and rotates it by 90.degree. into the transportation area.

Method for applying hard and soft covers to bound or unbound documents

A rotary stamp mechanism includes a drive wheel with a curved stamp holding housing held thereon by a sheet metal band to enable replacement and adjustment of the stamp housing. A stamping sequence is selected by a machine operator and the leading edge of the next succeeding copy sheet triggers rotation of the drive wheel and during one complete revolution of the drive wheel the copy sheet is stamped with a desired logo. A pawl on the drive wheel is lifted by the copy sheet for stamping purposes and gravity returns the pawl to its home position which in turn stops the drive wheel in its initial position for succeeding stamping.

A bindery system captures pages of a bound or unbound book in a hard or soft cover case by crimping a metal U-shaped channel which is bonded to the inside spine surface of the hard or soft covers.

A tape binding apparatus for applying decorative tape to a previously stapled booklet is disclosed as having a pair of binding surfaces upon which a piece of tape is placed after being drawn from a tape dispenser attached to one end of the apparatus. A manually operable device drives one of the surfaces toward the other surface when the bound edge of the booklet is applied to the surfaces. A pivotal guide mechanism is arranged to guide the booklet to the surfaces.

An in-line passive 'pinwheel' copy sheet rotator in a rotating disc configuration for use in a copier, intermediate module or the like rotates copy sheets 90 or 180 degrees as desired. The disc has four quadrants and is used in combination with and positioned in-line with a sheet transport such as a ball-on-belt registration mechanism and an edge guide for registering the sheets once they have been rotated. Copy sheets come into contact with fins on the disc due to their movement by the ball-on-roll transport and are rotated along with the disc. A deflector is positioned over a portion of the disc in order to enhance the guiding of copy sheets into the disc by reducing the inertia of the disc after each copy is rotated and indexes each quadrant through the application of drag on the fins.

A toner cartridge for use in a copying machine for supplying fresh toner to the developer for the machine. The cartridge is formed with an elongated opening to permit discharge of toner when inverted. A removable flexible strip covers the opening and is detachably held to the cartridge by adhesive material. The pattern of the adhesive material is non-linear at the portions of the cartridge adjacent the ends of the opening so that upon an application of a pulling force upon the strip to detach the same, the resistance force is gradual.
