A primary alkaline battery includes a housing, a cathode within the housing, an anode within the housing, and a separator electrically separating the anode and the cathode. The battery has a substantial (S/V) value.

An alkaline cell is disclosed having a cathode comprising manganese dioxide wherein the cathode is a semisolid during discharge of the cell. The cell has an anode comprising zinc and an electrolyte comprising potassium hydroxide. The semisolid cathode comprising manganese dioxide may be in the form of a putty or paste. The semisolid cathode reduces cathode polarization effects and results in increased manganese dioxide utilization (Amp-hr/g), particularly at high current drain, between about 0.5 and 2 Amp. The porosity of the cathode is between about 45% and 70%, and the volume ratio of electrolyte solution in the cathode to the solids in the cathode is at a value between about 0.7 and 2.3.

Alkaline cell with semisolid cathode

The invention features a prismatic battery with an electrically conductive housing comprising an elongated, prismatic can with an open end, and a housing cover pressed into the open end of the can and welded in place. The novel cover has an outer flange about its periphery, extending generally in the direction of extension of the sides of the can, which elastically deflects as the cover is pressed into the can to provide good contact for welding. The cover has two raised bumps forming internal pockets that are part of the internal volume of the cell. The bumps are also arranged to prevent rotation of the seal/vent assembly. One embodiment includes a plugged fill hole in one of the bumps. Corresponding methods of manufacture are also disclosed.

Prismatic battery housing

This invention pertains to an improved means of making electrical and mechanical contact to metal foil electrode in an electrochemical cell. A conductive element is used which has a multiplicity of teeth projecting therefrom. The teeth pierce through the metal foil electrode and are bent over to be flush with the electrode surface. A strong mechanical and electrical bond results.
