For the removal of trace quantities of iodine-containing contaminants from corrosive liquid feed streams, an adsorbent with distinct advantages over prior-art materials is provided. The treatment method involves the use of a suitable, silica-rich zeolite which has been cation-exchanged with an iodine-reactive metal. This inorganic adsorbent may be used in unbound form, or it can bound with a substantially insoluble porous inorganic refractory metal oxide binder. Reactivation and regeneration techniques, which are generally incompatible with prior-art adsorbent materials, are also disclosed.

A solution is provided to the long sought inorganic alternative to resin based adsorbents for iodide clean-up service for corrosive organic liquid. The solution involves the use of a solid inorganic adsorbent comprising a combination of a silica-rich zeolite molecular sieve, which has been cation-exchanged with an iodide-reactive metal selected from silver, mercury, copper, lead, thallium, palladium or mixtures thereof, with a substantially insoluble, porous refractory inorganic oxide binder. Reactivation and regeneration technique for the spent inorganic adsorbent are also covered.

Applicants have developed a unique process for preparing a shaped article comprising an ion exchange composition and a hydroxy oxide binder. The ion exchange compositions include metallotitanates, metallogermanates, pillared clays and metal phosphonates. The process involves combining the ion exchange composition with a binder precursor and water, forming the mixture into a shaped article and heating the article at a temperature of about 85.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. These shaped articles are useful for removing metal ions such as cesium from feed streams.

A new family of crystalline molecular sieves have been synthesized. These compositions have a microporous structure of ZrO.sub.3 octahedral units, and at least one of SiO.sub.2 tetrahedral units and GeO.sub.2 tetrahedral units. This invention relates to a process for removing contaminant metal ions from a liquid stream. The process involves contacting the liquid stream with a crystalline molecular sieve having the pharmacosiderite structure and having germanium and M metals as framework elements. Optionally, titanium and silicon can also be framework elements. The M metals can be any metal which has octahedral coordination and has a valence of +2, +3, +4 or +5. Illustrative of these M metals are niobium, tin, antimony, aluminum, gallium and tantalum. Molecular sieve agglomerates that can have improved physical and chemical properties are prepared by methods which comprise contacting the agglomerates with an alkali metal silicate solution. Molecular sieve agglomerates which comprise binders such as kaolin can additionally be contacted with an alkali hydroxide solution to convert the kaolin to Zeolite A prior to contacting the agglomerates with the alkali metal silicate solution to further improve properties. The molecular sieve agglomerates prepared according to the present invention are suitable for use as refrigerant desiccants.
