An insulator in the form of suspension insulator or pin type insulator has an elongated load sustaining body with a plurality of weathersheds extending radially relative to the longitudinal axis of the body on the outer surface of the body. The body and weathersheds are unitarily formed as one piece of rigid dielectric plastic polymer which are molded together. Clevis and eye coupling means are provided on the ends of the body to facilitate connection to support structures and high voltage lines.

An electrical device has a housing with an internal cavity lined with insulating material. An electrical component is mounted in the cavity between the opposite ends of the housing. An electrically conductive probe is mounted in the cavity at one housing end. An end connector is mounted in the cavity at another housing end. The electrical component is electrically connected to the end connector and to the probe. The electrical component connection to the probe includes wedge insert engaging the component inner end and engaging an inner surface of the lining of insulating material to form a seal between them. Gas generated by the electrical component will not flow past the wedge insert in the direction of the probe.

An electrical insulator in the form of a pintype insulator has a load sustaining mechanical core and a dielectric sheath overlying the mechanical core to protect the mechanical core from the weather. The mechanical core is constructed of a load sustaining dielectric material which is different from the dielectric material of the sheath. The mechanical core has a profiled outer surface with a top groove, two side grooves, an annular rib and an axially extending threaded bore. The dielectric sheath is applied over the mechanical core as thin as practical to minimize the amount of sheath material being used. However, the dielectrical sheath is molded on the mechanical core to form a pair of weathersheds which can either extend radially outwardly therefrom or substantially downwardly therefrom in the form of vertical sheds.

A modular electrical assembly is enclosed in an elastomeric weathershed housing, and has a plurality of electrical components and end terminals aligned in a column and in electrical connection with one another via their axially-directed ends and under an axially-directed compressive force via a non-conductive filament winding. The filament winding defines a crisscross pattern with lateral openings for venting gas upon failure of one of the electrical components. The openings can be filled with fracturable epoxy or other insulating materials. Each end terminal has an electrically conductive part with a radially extending flange at its inner end, and an electrically insulative part mounted over the electrically conductive part and engaging the flange.

An electrical assembly having a surge arrester coupled in parallel to an insulator of high mechanical strength for increasing the mechanical strength of the surge arrester. The arrester having a plurality of non-linear resistive blocks positioned between a pair of end fittings and enclosed in a polymeric weathershed housing. The insulator having a reinforced fiberglass rod with a pair of end fittings and covered by a polymeric weathershed housing. The end fittings of the surge arrester and the insulator being rigidly coupled together by a pair of mounting plates for maintaining the surge arrester parallel to the insulator, and thereby increasing the mechanical strength of the arrester.

An electrical assembly, such as an insulator or a surge arrester, utilizing a pair of end collars for coupling an elastomeric weathershed housing to a pair of metallic end fittings, and for reducing electrical stress at the interface of the ends of the weathershed housing and the end fittings, and for sealing the ends of the weathershed housing to the end fittings. In particular, a radially directed force is applied to the weathershed housing by insertion of the core member into the axial bore of the weathershed housing causing radial outward expansion of the weathershed housing into intimate contact with the end collars. Also, each of the ends of the weathershed housing is held in contact against the inner end of the respective end fitting to seal the interface therebetween. Accordingly, a watertight seal is created at the interface between each of the end fittings and the ends of the weathershed housings. The end collars are electrically and mechanically coupled to the end fittings via either a press fit or a set screw for reducing electrical stresses at the interface of the ends of the weathershed housing and the end fittings. The core member can be an insulating rod or a plurality of electrical components, such as metal oxide varistors.

An electrical assembly, such as an insulator or a surge arrester, utilizing a plurality of elastomeric weathershed housings for enclosing a core member therein. The elastomeric weathershed housings are coupled and sealed together by an insulating collar. A radially directed force is applied to the collar or the weathershed housings to cause intimate contact between the collar and the end portions of the weathershed housings to provide a weathertight seal. In the preferred embodiment, the radially directed force is provided by insertion of the core member into the axial bore of the weathershed housings causing radial outward expansion of the weathershed housings into intimate contact with the insulating collar. In another embodiment, the radially directed force is provided by a heat shrinkable insulating collar, which is shrunk about the end portions of adjacent weathershed housings. The core member can be an insulating rod or a plurality of electrical components, such as metal oxide varistors.

A modular electrical assembly is enclosed in an elastomeric weathershed housing, and has a plurality of electrical components aligned in a row with terminals at the row ends. The electrical components and the terminals are in electrical connection with one another via their axially-directed ends and are axially compressed by a non-conductive filament winding. The filament winding has axial end portions wrapped about the terminals and extending axially beyond the terminals in a direction opposite to the electrical components. The winding end portions are prestressed in axial compression to increase cantilever strength and to decrease cantilever deflection.
