A circuit board water-proofing coating composition is provided comprising: at least one passivating agent, preferably containing a molecule comprising a thio-functional group, desirably a thiol group, an azolic moiety, or an azole, and combinations thereof; at least one binder component comprising an organic or inorganic film-forming polymer, and/or one or more polymer pre-cursors polymerizable on a substrate surface; and optionally one or more additive(s); also provided are methods of making and using the coating composition and coated circuit boards.

Coatings for waterproofing electronic components

An electrode material useful as a dry in place deposit comprising at least one metal chelating polymer; an active material capable of reversibly intercalating lithium ions; a plurality of electrical conductor particles; a binder polymer. The electrode material is formed into a slurry using a non-aqueous solvent. The metal chelating polymer may be a reaction product of a polyphenolic polymer; an aldehyde, a ketone, or mixtures thereof; and an amine. The electrode material slurry is deposited on a current collector and dried to form a positive electrode in a secondary lithium ion battery. The deposited electrode material has high flexibility, adhesion to the current collector, resistance to electrolyte damage, and low electrical resistance. The electrode material forms a superior positive electrode at a relatively low additional cost and with no increase in process complexity.

Disclosed is a neutral to alkaline inorganic conversion coating composition that can be applied directly to a metal surface without a phosphatizing pre-treatment and that provides significant corrosion protection to the surface. The coating composition is very versatile and can accommodate addition of a wide variety of organic polymers which can be added directly to the coating composition thus eliminating multistep coating processes.

Mildly alkaline thin inorganic corrosion protective coating for metal substrates

Coating bath compositions and processes useful in depositing organic polymeric coatings on metal substrates at low voltages are provided, the baths comprising one or more dispersed organic film forming polymers; and an etchant; wherein the principle film forming polymer is stabilized in the bath by the presence of anionic surfactant, but can be readily anodically deposited under low voltage. The invention also relates to processes of depositing a coating and metal substrates coated using the baths and processes of the invention.

Electrodeposition of an autodepositable polymer

What is disclosed is a water-based adhesive composition that is an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of a polymer component having functional groups that are inactive in a reversible manner in the adhesive composition as prepared; and a water-soluble, or water emulsion, or dispersion of a cross linker component having functional groups wherein the functional groups are inactive in a reversible manner in the adhesive composition as prepared. Preferably the adhesive composition has a pH of from 7 to 11 and a volatile stabilizing base component is used to inactivate the functional groups and to provide the pH. The functional groups in the polymer component and the cross linker component are activated when the volatile base is removed during lamination heat treatment. The adhesive composition can be used to adhere a variety of plastic films to metal substrates without reliance on non-water-based adhesives.

Water-based adhesive for lamination of polymers to metal substrates

Disclosed is a release on demand type corrosion inhibitor composition for a metal substrate formed from only non-electrically conductive film forming copolymer(s); a nitrogen containing functional group X, where the group X comprises a pyridine, a dihydropyridine, a pyrrole, an imidazole, or a mixtures thereof; and a metallate anion. The metallate anion binds to a nitrogen in the functional group X by ion pairing. A localized rise in pH is believed to cause release of the anion via a protonation/deprotonation reaction and the released anion suppresses the corrosion formation. The coating composition includes no electrically conductive polymers.

Release on demand corrosion inhibitor composition

The invention provides high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials that have improved moisture barrier properties and/or anti-corrosive properties and a means to obtain the high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials that eliminates/minimizes the need for process solvents. A hydrophobic water barrier enhancing agent, epoxy pre-polymer and ethylenically unsaturated monomer, as an alternative to organic solvent, are combined to yield an epoxy pre-polymer-monomer-hydrophobic water barrier enhancing agent blend, which may be blended with other coating components and additives. The resulting blend is then dispersed in water with surfactant and the ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized (in the presence of other formulation components) to yield a dispersion. The dispersion may then be used as one component of a coating formulation. The coating formulation can then be applied to materials and cured to form a final coating.

Coatings with enhanced water-barrier and anti-corrosive properties

The invention provides high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials and a means to obtain the high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials that eliminates/minimizes the need for process solvents. An epoxy pre-polymer is used. The epoxy pre-polymer is combined with ethylenically unsaturated monomer, as an alternative to organic solvent, to yield an epoxy-monomer blend, which may be blended with other coating components and additives. The resulting blend is then dispersed in water with surfactant and the ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized (in the presence of other formulation components) to yield a dispersion. The dispersion may then be used as one component of a coating formulation. The coating formulation can then be applied to materials and cured to form a final coating.

Corrosion resistant films based on ethylenically unsaturated monomer modified epoxy emulsions

A method of preparing a carbamate or urea-functional compound is described comprising the step of reacting a lactone or hydroxy carboxylic acid with a compound (A) comprising a carbamate or urea group or a group that can be converted to a carbamate or urea group, and an active hydrogen group capable of reacting with the hydroxy carboxylic acid or in a ring-opening reaction with a lactone. The compound thus prepared is useful in curable compositions.

Epoxy resins that have one or more functional groups that impart an anionic character to the epoxy resins are prepared. The resulting anionic functionalized epoxy resins may be used to produce high solids, epoxy-based dispersions that are capable of being used as a component of a coating bath which can provide to a coating that may be applied to a surface using a variety of techniques.

The present invention provides an olefin-based block copolymer that has an olefin block that is substantially saturated and at least one (poly)ester or (poly)ether block. The olefin-based block copolymer of the invention can be prepared by reacting a liquid hydroxyl-functional, saturated or substantially saturated olefin polymer with a chain-extension reagent that is reactive with hydroxyl groups and will polymerize in a head-to-tail arrangement of monomer units. The olefin-based block copolymer of the invention can be used to prepare an adhesion promoter that provides excellent adhesion of subsequent coating layers to olefinic substrates like TPO and superior properties as compared to previously used adhesion promoters containing chlorinated polyolefins. Alternatively, the olefin-based copolymers of the invention can be used as an additive in a curable coating composition to provide excellent adhesion to olefinic substrates like TPO, even when used in very minor amounts compared to the amounts required for previously known agents.

This invention is directed to a highly stable composition and application process for cathodic electrodeposition of a coating which is thermally curable at very low baking temperatures. The invention provides both long-term stability of the bath composition prior to application and highly crosslinked corrosion resistant films when cured at baking temperatures as low as 93&deg; C.
