An approved rear wheel angle output is generated using the desired rear wheel angle input and the vehicle speed input, wherein the approved rear wheel angle is based upon one of a plurality of defined operating states, the plurality of operating states including operation at a speed in a first range, operation at a speed in a second range, and transitions therebetween.

A method for implementing a vehicle stability enhancement (VSE) system for a vehicle is disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, the method includes receiving a handwheel angle input and adjusting the handwheel angle input in response to a variable steering ratio generated in the vehicle. Disclosed herein in an exemplary embodiment is a method for providing variable assist in an active steering system of a vehicle. The method comprises: receiving an input signal that includes at least one of, a variable ratio command signal, a stability command signal, a hand wheel position signal, a vehicle speed signal indicative of a speed of the vehicle, a signal indicative of an operator selected function, and a signal indicative a vehicle operating mode. The method also comprises: generating an assist command to an assist mechanism responsive to the input signal wherein the assist mechanism is operatively coupled to the differential actuator and a road wheel of the steering system to provide an assist torque responsive to the motion of the output shaft. The active steering system includes a hand wheel operatively coupled to an input of a differential actuator and a motor operatively coupled to the differential actuator. The differential actuator is configured to translate motion of the input into motion of the output shaft, where the motion of the output shaft is further responsive to the motor and wherein the output shaft is coupled to the road wheel of the steering system.

The VSE system is used in conjunction with a steering system having a plurality of driver-selectable steering modes associated therewith. In an exemplary embodiment, the method includes configuring a reference model within the VSE system to generate desired vehicle handling aspects, the desired vehicle handling aspects being a function of one or more driver inputs to the steering system. Then, a determination is made as to which of the plurality of driver-selectable steering modes is activated, wherein each of the desired vehicle handling aspects generated is made further dependent upon a specific steering mode selected.

Method for automatically adjusting reference models in vehicle stability enhancement (VSE) systems

A control system for a steering system in a vehicle comprising: a reference model responsive to an operator input that computes desired states of the vehicle; a feedforward controller in operable communication with the reference model. The feedforward controller computes a first control value based on input from said reference model and based on at least one of: a lateral velocity, a rate of lateral velocity, a lateral acceleration, and a combination, wherein the combination includes a yaw rate with at least one of a lateral velocity, a rate of lateral velocity, and a lateral acceleration of the motor vehicle. The system also includes an actuator for affecting the steering system based on the first control value, the actuator in operable communication with the feedforward controller.

The invention provides a method, a computer usable medium including a program, and a system for determining a vehicle payload condition. The method and computer usable medium include the steps of determining a first payload-state parameter, a second payload-state parameter, and at least one roll value. A first differential is determined based on the first payload-state parameter and the second payload-state parameter. A second differential is determined based on the first payload-state parameter and the roll value. A multiplier is determined. A payload estimate is determined based on the first payload differential, the second payload differential, and the multiplier. The system includes means for achieving the method steps of the invention.
