A shock simulation system including a support plane, a first mass element and a first spring element attached between the support plane and the first mass element. Also included, is a second mass element that is attached to the first mass element with a second spring element as well as a cocking apparatus, positioned between the support plane and the second mass element, that is capable of accumulating and storing energy in the spring elements. The system also includes a trigger for releasing the energy stored in the springs and for causing a mechanical shock event that is substantially transferred to the second mass.

The braked linear nipper of the present invention comprises a belt roller, belt, and a belt load for applying a squeeze load along a length of a linear material being pulled along the belt by an object onto which the linear material is being wound. The linear material imparts motion to the belt via friction coupled by the squeeze load. A brake coupled to the belt induces a tension in the linear material.

A flextensional transducer includes a stack of driving elements disposed ng a linear axis to convert a driving power into vibrational energy. End pieces, disposed at each end of the stack, have outwardly facing arcuate surfaces. A flexural shell, formed into a loop, is disposed to circumscribe the stack and the end pieces to present an elliptical cross-section with the major axis thereof being generally coincident with the stack's linear axis. The shell is reactively coupled to the end pieces at the outwardly facing arcuate surfaces. A pliant assembly is positioned between each end piece and the flexural shell for maintaining conformal engagement between portions of the end pieces and the flexural shell. The pliant assembly is designer such that its stiffness may be adjusted.

An injector assembly is provided for use with a high heat, high pressure bustion chamber which utilizes a highly corrosive fuel. The injector assembly includes a ceramic injector which has an annular ceramic flange. A metallic retaining apparatus is provided which includes a pair of retainer plates and a tightening device. In a preferred embodiment one of the retainer plates is a retainer ring. With this arrangement the ceramic flange is clamped between the retainer ring and the retainer plate by the tightening device. The retainer ring is provided with an annular groove. An annular spring is disposed within the groove in engagement with the ceramic flange. Because of the different coefficients of expansion the metal of the retaining apparatus will expand away from the ceramic flange when the combustion chamber is operated. When this occurs the annular spring will expand to maintain a high integrity seal between the injector assembly and the combustion chamber. Also, the injector is provided with an annular cavity which is structurally supported and cooled therein by a coolant.
