Methods and systems for performing borehole operations are described. The methods include generating an information signal in a borehole using a pulse generation member, wherein the information signal comprises a pressure variation within a borehole fluid, detecting, in the borehole, a first signal that correlates to the information signal at a first time, detecting, in the borehole, a second signal that correlates to the information signal at a second time, and performing a borehole operation using the first signal and the second signal.

A method and apparatus for predicting a formation parameter at a drill bit drilling a formation is disclosed. A vibration measurement is obtained at each of a plurality of depths in the borehole. A formation parameter is obtained proximate each of the plurality of depths in the borehole. A relationship is determined between the obtained vibration measurements and the measured formation parameters at the plurality of depths. A vibration measurement at a new drill bit location is obtained and the formation parameter at the new drill bit location is predicted from the vibration measurement and the determined relation. Formation type can be determined at the new drill bit location from the new vibration measurement and the determined relationship.

Synthetic formation evaluation logs based on drilling vibrations

Systems, methods and devices for evaluating a condition of a downhole component of a drillstring. Methods include estimating a value of a tool parameter of the component at at least one selected position on the drillstring; and using the estimated value to evaluate the condition of the downhole component. The estimating is done using a trained artificial neural network that receives information from at least one sensor that is positionally offset from the selected position. The method may further include creating a record representing information from estimated values of the tool parameter at the at least one selected position over time. The at least one selected position may include a plurality of positions, such as positions at intervals along the component, including substantially continuously along the component.

A wired pipe joining system for joining wired pipe segments having first end, a second end, a first coupler in the first end, a second coupler in the second end, and a transmission medium in communication with the first and second couplers. The system includes: a lower clamp configured to hold a top pipe segment; a top rotation arm to guide a first end of a new pipe segment into a second end of a top pipe segment; a top coupler measurement device configured to connect to a second end of the new pipe segment and receive a signal from a second coupler in the second end of the new pipe segment; and a controller that causes the top rotation arm to move the new pipe segment to cause the signal received by the top coupler measurement to be maximized.

Methods and systems for automatically performing a sweep operation in a borehole penetrating an earth formation including conveying a drillstring through a borehole, the drillstring having one or more sensors located thereon, determining that a sweep operation should be performed based on information obtained from the one or more sensors, determining characteristics of a pill to be used for a sweep operation based on information obtained from the one or more sensors, preparing a pill in accordance with the determined characteristics, deploying the pill into the drillstring and conveying the pill through the drillstring, and monitoring the sweep operation while the pill is within the drillstring and verifying the sweep operation. At least one of the determination that a sweep operation should be performed, the determination of the pill characteristics, or the preparation of the pill is performed automatically.

A system for measuring directional characteristics of a downhole tool includes: at least one bending moment (BM) measurement device disposed at a downhole component, the at least one BM measurement device configured to generate bending moment data at at least one depth in the borehole, the bending moment data including a bending vector of the downhole tool, a bending moment representing an amplitude of the bending vector, and a bending tool face (BTF) angle representing an orientation of the bending vector; and a processor in operable communication with the BM measurement device and configured to receive bending moment data from the BM measurement device, calculate a dogleg severity (DLS) from the bending moment and a well tool face (WTF) angle from the BTF angle, and calculate at least one of a change in inclination and a change in azimuth based on the DLS and the WTF angle.

System and method for estimating directional characteristics based on bending moment measurements

An apparatus for continuously flowing drilling fluid along a drill string includes a continuous circulation device having at least a first fluid path in fluid communication with a top drive and a second fluid path in communication with a diverter. The diverter is in selective fluid communication with a pipe stand associated with the drills string. The apparatus also includes at least one sensor that estimates at least one operating parameter associated with the continuous circulation device. A related method includes using a continuous circulation device as described to manipulate the drill string and controlling the continuous circulation device using at least one sensor configured to estimate at least one operating parameter associated with the continuous circulation device.

A method of manufacturing a downhole conduit segment is disclosed. The method includes: extruding a material as a tubular shape to form a body of the conduit segment having an interior bore extending through a length of the segment, the body including an exterior surface and an interior surface defined by the interior bore, the material being an extrudable material sufficient to withstand conditions in a downhole environment; and extruding at least one passageway extending along the length of the body and disposed at least partially between the exterior surface and the interior surface, the at least one passageway having a shape configured to restrict lateral movement of a conductor disposed therein.

The system also includes a surface processing system coupled to a master clock and configured to determine a time offset between the master clock and the local clock of an nth node among the plurality of nodes based on a downhole generated synchronization signal.

The disclosure provides a method which includes transmitting signals over a time period between a downhole location and a surface location during drilling of a wellbore; recording the time of each signal at the surface using a surface clock and the time of each signal downhole using a downhole clock; and correcting the downhole measurements using the recorded times.
