A shaped charge for use with a perforating gun having an adapter that can couple the shaped charge with perforating gun systems of more than one size. An interference fit can couple the adapter to the open end of a shaped charge. The adapter includes a base section having an outer diameter exceeding the shaped charge outer diameter. The adapter larger diameter can be coupled to perforating gun systems formed to receive shaped charges whose outer diameters exceed the outer diameter of the shaped charge coupled to the adapter. Thus the adapter can couple a shaped charge to a perforating gun that might otherwise have fittings too large to accommodate the shaped charge.

Forming a shaped charge with such a charge case allows for gun strips to be formed with increased web material between adjacent shape charges in the gun strips. The increased web material provides for a more structurally sound gun tube, especially when dealing with high density charges. Notches may be provided in the gun tube on the outer radius of the holes formed to receive the shape charges, the notches are to be aligned with the bosses on the outer periphery of the shaped charge case. This also may orient the charge cases so they are pre-aligned for ready connection to an associated detonation cord.

A shaped charge liner formed by injection molding, where the liner comprises a powdered metal mixture of a first and second metal. The mixture includes about 50% to about 99% by weight percent of the first metal, about 1% to about 50% by weight percent of a second metal, about 1% to about 50% by weight percent of a third metal. In one embodiment, the first metal comprises tungsten, the second metal may comprise nickel, and the third metal may comprise copper.

Injection molded shaped charge liner

A shaped charge liner formed by injection molding, where the liner components include powdered metal and organic binder. The liner components are blended then processed within an injection molding device and urged from the molding device into a mold where a liner shape is formed. The liner shape is debinded, both mechanically and chemically. Mechanical debinding involves heating and chemical debinding comprises treating the liner shape with a solution to dissolve and remove the binder components. The process of forming the shaped charge liner does not include sintering. The present process can also use 'green products' formed by the injection molding device that are not debinded. A shaped charge case can also be formed using the present method. The added step of sintering can be applied to the process of forming the shaped charge case.

A method of producing a liner for a shaped charge comprising mixing a composition of powdered metal with plasticizers and binders to form a paste. The paste is then particulated and injected into an injection mold. The paste is molded into a molded liner shape and then chemically treated to remove plasticizers and binders from the molded liner shape. After being removed from the injection mold the molded liner shape is sintered inside of a furnace. The powdered metal composition can be comprised of a mixture of from 60% to 97% by weight of powdered heavy metal and from 40% to 3% by weight of cobalt, or the powdered metal composition can be comprised of a mixture of from 60% to 97% by weight of powdered heavy metal and from 40% to 3% of copper, the preferred heavy metal being tungsten.
