Methods and systems for high bandwidth communications interface

Systems and methods are described for transmitting data over physical channels to provide a high bandwidth, low latency interface between a transmitting device and a receiving device operating at high speed with low power utilization. Communication is performed using group signaling over sets of four wires using a vector signaling code, where each wire of a set carries a low-swing signal that may take on one of four signal values. Topologies and designs of wire sets are disclosed with preferred characteristics for group signaling communications.

Conventional methods using signal test patterns to identify wiring errors are difficult to apply to interfaces encoding information as signal state transitions rather than directly as signal states. A system utilizing excitation of wires with selected transition coded patterns and evaluation of received results is described to identify failed wire connections. This approach may be advantageously used to provide fault detection and redundant path selection in systems incorporating stacked chip interconnections using Through Silicon Vias.

A transfer request bus and transfer request bus node is described which is suitable for use in a data transfer controller processing multiple concurrent transfer requests despite the attendant collisions which result when conflicting transfer requests occur. Transfer requests are passed from an upstream transfer request node to downstream transfer request node and then to a transfer request controller with queue. At each node a local transfer request can also be inserted to be passed on to the transfer controller queue. Collisions at each transfer request node are resolved using a token passing scheme wherein a transfer request node possessing the token allows a local request to be inserted in preference to the upstream request.

A data processing apparatus includes first () and second () functional unit groups, each includes a plurality of functional units and a register file () comprising a plurality of registers. A comparator () receives the operand register number of a current instruction for a functional unit in the first functional unit group, and the destination register number of an immediately preceding instruction for the second functional unit group. A register file bypass multiplexer () selects the data from the register corresponding to the operand number of the current instruction on no match and selects the output of the second functional unit group (hotpath) if the comparator indicates a match. The first functional unit utilizes the output of the second functional unit group without waiting for the result to be stored in the register file.

A first hardware bit transformation ( ) forms an upper half of an N-way bit deal of the two operands ( ), and a second hardware bit transformation ( ) forms a lower half of the N-way bit deal ( ). The upper and lower halves of the N-way bit deal represent a diagonally mirrored image ( ) of the N&times;N bit data block. The method retrieves a data block from memory and packs it into two input operand registers. The two hardware bit transformations fill respective destination registers. The data is unpacked from the destination registers and stored to memory. Diagonally mirrored imaged of larger blocks of data can be formed using this technique on minor image blocks and swapping the mirrored minor image blocks.
