There is provided a reversible spray tip or nozzle used with a spray gun or like device for hydraulically atomizing and spraying liquids such as paint. The spray tip includes a plastic housing having a forward extending spray tip guard integral therewith, a cylindrically shaped rotatable turret member diametrically received for rotation in the housing and having a diametric bore therethrough for receipt of a spray tip insert, and an elongated seal insert axially received in the housing upstream from the turret member. A securing nut rotatably mounted to the housing at the spray gun end thereof secures the reversible spray tip to the discharge end of the spray gun. The enhanced sealing effectiveness of the reversible spray tip permits effective sealing of the assembly by finger tightening of the securing nut.

Reversible spray tip

A spray tip guard for a hydraulically operated air-less spray gun which is generally Y-shaped having forwardly extending diverging ears arranged parallel to the fan spray of the spray pattern issuing from the spray tip of the spray gun. A pair of forwardly extending projections are provided at the apex of the diverging ears adjacent to and on either side of the stream of high pressure liquid emerging from the spray tip so as to provide an obstacle to the approach of the stream of high pressure liquid prior to its being atomized.

Spray tip guard for hydraulically operated air-less spray gun

There is provided a high volume low pressure spray painting system, control therefor, and method of operation therefor. The high volume low pressure spray painting system includes an electrically powered blower motor with a cooling fan, an high volume low pressure blower fan driven by the blower motor, an air conduit connecting the outlet of the blower fan to a spray gun adapted to atomize liquid paint with the high volume low pressure air delivered by the blower fan, and a valve in the spray gun actuated by a trigger for controlling the high volume low pressure air delivered by the blower fan. The control for the spray painting system includes a second valve arranged downstream from the blower fan outlet biased to a normally closed position which checks the flow of high volume low pressure air delivered by the blower fan when the valve in the spray gun is closed and simultaneously with the closing of the second valve the speed of the blower motor is reduced to idle. When the valve in the spray gun is open the pressure downstream from the second valve is reduced allowing the second valve to open and causing the speed of the blower motor to increase to a normal operating speed.

There is provided a totally enclosed electric motor which is effectively cooled by means of an internal ventilation system and an external ventilation system. The internal ventilation system includes an internal fan driven by the rotor which forces internal ventilating air into and along an annular series of longitudinal internal ducts arranged adjacent to the internal cylindrical wall supporting the stator. The internal ventilating air leaving the internal ducts enters a brush compartment where the air is directed axially over the commutator and through the stator-rotor arrangement and back to the internal fan. The external ventilation system includes an external fan driven by the rotor which forces external ventilating air from the atmosphere into and along an annular series of longitudinal external ducts arranged radially outwardly from the series of internal ducts and into exhaust compartments at the far axial end of the motor.

Totally enclosed electric motor

There is provided a mechanism or system for use with a motor driven mechanism, such as a pump for pressurizing paint for spray painting purposes, which permits conversion of the power source therefor between an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, each of which being capable of directly driving the motor driven mechanism. The mechanism or system includes a commonly shared clutch mechanism which is controlled such that the clutch is engaged and the pump operated until the operating level is reached at which time the clutch is disengaged so that the electric motor or internal combustion engine is under no load. The clutch mechanism utilizes a magnetic clutch and the clutch driven plate is non-rotatably connected to the pump input shaft while the clutch drive plate in non-rotatably connected to the motor or engine output shaft. The clutch drive plate is splined or keyed onto the engine or motor output shaft and is interchangeable between the output shafts of the electric motor and internal combustion engine. The electromagnetic coil, when energized, magnetically draws the clutch drive plate towards the clutch driven plate and causes the two plates to engage with one another.

Clutch apparatus for rapid power source conversion

A pump system is provided for the pressurization of liquid paint sufficient for hydraulic atomization when the paint is released through the nozzle of a spray gun. The system includes a high pressure pump with an inlet communicating with a source of liquid paint and an outlet, a motor for driving the pump, a pressure controller having a sensing element for sensing and controlling the pressure of the liquid paint delivered by the pump, a filter for filtering the liquid paint delivered by the pump, and a by-pass valve for priming the system on start-up. A multiplex unit is detachably secured to the pressure outlet of the pump and includes a continuous fluid passageway therethrough which begins at the pump outlet and terminates at an outlet port which communicates with a spray gun. The passageway includes the sensing element of the pressure sensor, the filter, and the by-pass valve.

High pressure paint pump

There is provided an improved airless paint spray pump having an intake, an inlet valve assembly, a pumping chamber, an outlet, an outlet valve assembly, and stroke pumping means for pumping the fluid paint into the pumping chamber through the intake during the intake stroke and through the outlet on the pumping stroke. The inlet valve assembly includes a flat valve which cooperates with a valve seat at the intake and is displaced from the valve seat during the intake stroke of the pumping means and is seated on the valve seat during the pumping stroke of the pumping means. The flat inlet valve replaces the previous ball type inlet or check valve thereby expanding the design capabilities of the pump.

Hydraulic paint pump

There is provided a hydraulic pressure operated electrical switch having a spring biased piston which is movable by the force of the hydraulic pressure of the fluid to be sensed to activate a microswitch. The pressure required to move the piston can be altered by adjusting the force produced by the spring acting on the piston. An operating pressure differential is provided by a diaphragm which operates to move the piston by reason of the hydraulic pressure exerted thereon. The diaphragm has a spring rate and produces a force in conjunction with the spring bias against the piston when the piston is moved as a result of the hydraulic pressure overcoming the spring bias. The spring rate of the diaphragm is affected by the amount of hydraulic pressure exerted thereon so that, as a result of adjusting the operating pressure of the switch, the operating differential pressure is altered.

Pressure operated switch for controlling an airless paint pump

A self-compensating seal having a substantially torodially shaped seal body and a plurality of axially separated annular wipers extending radially inwardly from the inner rim of the seal body in parallel arrangement. When a shaft or rod having a diameter greater than the inside diameter of the seal opening is inserted through the central seal opening, the wipers are bent or collapsed so as to extend in an axial direction. Each of the wipers is radially inwardly biased so that wear at the sealing surfaces of the wipers caused by shaft movement is compensated for automatically.

A power roller assembly for painting or coating surfaces is provided having a roller applicator rotatably mounted on a roller applicator support arm through which paint under pressure is supplied to the interior of the roller applicator by means of a control valve communicating with a source of paint under pressure. The paint is distributed longitudinally along the interior of the roller applicator by means of a tubular-shaped manifold co-axially mounted and spaced from the roller applicator axle. The paint in the interior of the roller applicator is pushed longitudinally back and forth thereacross by means of an auger-like spiral mounted co-axially with the roller applicator for rotation therewith.

Power roller assembly

A fluid swivel coupling is provided for interconnecting two fluid conduits so as to permit relative rotational movement between the interconnected fluid conduits about two axes at the coupling which are perpendicular to each other. The swivel coupling includes a swivel body connectable to a fluid conduit and adapted to accept for rotational movement a spindle member including a 'U' shaped yoke rotatingly supporting a fluid conduit connector between the arms thereof. The swivel coupling is provided with a passageway between the interconnected fluid conduits which is continuous and remains uninterrupted throughout the range of movement of the swivel coupling.

There is provided a reversible spray tip of the type used with a spray device adapted for hydraulically atomizing and spraying liquids, the reversible spray tip includes a rotatable member mounted in the spray tip housing having a diametric bore therethrough terminating in a spray opening, the housing includes an axial bore communicating between the fluid passageway of the spray device and the diametric bore of the rotatable member, a sealing member is mounted in the axial bore of the housing and is provided with an axial fluid bore therethrough communicating between the fluid passageway of the spray device and the diametric bore of the rotatable member, the sealing member includes a resilient sealing washer disposed between the nozzle housing and the sealing face of the spray device. The sealing washer is undercut in the internal sidewall at the inlet end thereof so as to form an annular skirt abutting the sealing face of the spray device. This annular skirt is urged against the sealing face of the spray device by the high pressure fluid in the spray nozzle.

A reversible spray tip or nozzle is provided for use with spray guns and like devices adapted to hydraulically atomize and spray liquids such as paint comprising a housing, a removable rotatable member transversely located in said housing having a transverse fluid bore terminating in a spray opening, and a sealing member in said housing slideably and releasably engaging the rotatable member and having a fluid passageway therethrough communicating between the fluid bore in the rotatable member and the source of high pressure liquid supplied to the spray gun or like device.

A fluid swivel coupling is provided for interconnecting two fluid conduits so that they may swivel or rotate about their common axis. The coupling includes a swivel body connected to one fluid conduit and adapted to accept for rotational movement therein a spindle which is connected to a second fluid conduit and which is provided with an axial fluid bore which communicates between the two fluid conduits. The swivel coupling further includes a packing seal for preventing leakage between the swivel body and spindle. That part of the coupling moving with respect to the packing seal is formed of a very hard, wear resistant material in order to prevent leaking as a result of wear.

An improved control valve is provided which is utilized in spray guns and like devices for hydraulically atomizing and spraying liquids such as paint wherein the spray control valve functions as the spray tip, the spray control valve being mounted in a housing attached to the spray gun handle and includes a fluid bore communicating with the pressurized liquid supplied to the spray gun, a valve bore intersecting the fluid bore and substantially transverse thereto, and a spray opening substantially aligned with said fluid bore and intersected by said valve bore, the spray gun further includes a valve pin moveable in said valve bore and normally biased to obstruct the spray opening, and a trigger means for moving the valve pin against the biasing action to unobstruct the spray opening and define the extent thereof. The improvement in the spray control valve comprises exposing a circumferential segment of the valve bore to the atmosphere by means of a relief bore formed in the spray control valve intersecting the valve bore, the relief bore having a diameter greater than the valve bore so that a circumferential segment of the valve bore is thereby exposed to the atmosphere to thereby relieve the pressure of any liquid material which infiltrates into the valve bore between the wall thereof and the valve pin.
