A process and apparatus for the recovery of oil from aqueous oil refinery waste involves mixing the waste with a fluidizing oil and evaporating the water from the mixture in a plurality of stages. The dewatered mixture is fed to a delayed coking system in which a conventional coker feedstock is being used. The heavy hydrocarbon portion of the dewatered mixture changes to coke and light hydrocarbon material, the inert solids become trapped in the coke, and the fluidizing oil vaporizes. A stream of heavy coker gas oil is fed from a fractionator in the delayed coking system to a fluidizing tank where it is mixed with the sludge to define the fluidizing oil. Another hot stream of hydrocarbon material from the coker fractionator is sent to the evaporator section to provide the heat for evaporation.

Oil recovery process and apparatus for oil refinery waste

A method for conditioning delayed coke includes allowing coke to form in a first chamber or coke drum, while simultaneously conditioning coke in a second coke drum by flowing through it a hydrocarbon conditioning fluid recirculated from another portion of the coking apparatus, said conditioning fluid having a temperature of more than 750.degree. F. and less than 1000.degree. F., and decoking a third coke drum. The coking, conditioning and decoding operations are sequentially switched among the coke drums.

Method for extended conditioning of delayed coke

A delayed coking process and a solvent deasphalting process are combined so that an asphalt mix of asphalt and solvent from the solvent deasphalting process is sent as feedstock to the delayed coking process to form coke and intermediate hydrocarbon vapor and liquid products. The vaporization of the solvent in a delayed coker heater assists the flow of the asphalt mix through the heater, and a portion of the asphalt mix is directed to a delayed coking fractionator so that the flow of solvent through the delayed coking heater can be adjusted by varying the relative amounts of asphalt mix sent to the delayed coker heater and to the fractionator. A deasphalted oil mix of deasphalted oil and solvent from the solvent deasphalting process is heated by hotter fluid products from a fractionator in the delayed coking process, and makeup solvent to a solvent deasphalting section is heated by vapors in the fractionator overhead. The solvent is recovered from the deasphalted oil mix to yield deasphalted oil, which is stripped in the same vessel as products from the fractionator of the delayed coking process. Condensation of the vapors from the fractionator overhead produces sufficient lean oil that a separate lean oil still may not be required for the economic recovery of coker liquefied petroleum gases. Solvent may be recoverd from the lean oil and naphtha products to supplement the makeup solvent.

Asphalt coking method

The present invention provides a method of quenching heated coke in a coke drum. Quench water is fed into the coke drum to cool the coke, and the stress in the coke drum wall is monitored during the quenching. The rate of feeding the quench water into the coke drum is regulated to prevent the stress in the coke drum wall from exceeding a predetermined limit. The stress is monitored by measuring either the longitudinal thermal gradient or the rates of change in the drum wall temperature over time.
