A method of determining occupancy of an area is disclosed herein. The method includes receiving a first signal from an occupancy sensor, the first signal indicating a distance to a surface and an infrared signature of the area, determining a first infrared signature of the area based on the first signal from the occupancy sensor, receiving a second signal from the occupancy sensor, the second signal indicating the distance to a surface and the infrared signature of the area, determining a second infrared signature of the area based on the second signal, the second infrared signature being different than the first infrared signature, determining that the area is occupied based at least on part on the second infrared signature being different than the first infrared signature, and setting a status of the area to occupied in response to the second infrared signature being different than the first infrared signature.

The method may include emitting one or more beams of 222 nm light onto a portion of the surface using one or more far ultraviolet (UV) light sources capable of emitting 222 nm light, the portion of the surface being coated with one or more fluorescent coatings. The method may include capturing images of the portion of the surface. The method may include adjusting one or more image characteristics for the captured images using one or more filtering methods. The method may include generating a histogram of the adjusted images based on the one or more filtering methods. The method may include determining a pixel surface area for the generated histogram. The method may include calculating the exposure dose for the surface based on the generated pixel surface area and a predetermined calibration curve.

The first LED may be configured to emit first electromagnetic radiation having a first wavelength of between about 600 nanometers ('nm') and about 740 nm, the second LED may be configured to emit second electromagnetic radiation having a second wavelength of between about 500 nm and about 565 nm, and the third LED may be configured to emit third electromagnetic radiation having a third wavelength between about 315 nm and about 430 nm. Thus, the third electromagnetic radiation may be disinfecting UV-A radiation that is incorporated into a lighting unit that produces visible light.
