An embodiment of the invention is an optical interconnect module comprising a silicon carrier; a communication integrated circuit mounted on the silicon carrier and an optical integrated circuit flip chip mounted on the silicon carrier. The optical integrated circuit is in electrical communication with the communication integrated circuit by electrical paths in the silicon carrier. Optical paths in the silicon carrier provide optical coupling between the optical integrated circuit and an optical link.

Silicon carrier for optical interconnect modules

An optical testing device includes an optical fiber having a first numerical aperture at a first end of the optical fiber. A positioning structure is attached to the optical fiber for moving the first end of the optical fiber to any portion of a substrate for testing an optical device. The optical device may be disposed at any location on the substrate and provides a light beam with an emission angle less than the first numerical aperture. A test head collects the light beam through the optical fiber to test the optical device. A method for positioning the optical fiber and testing the optical device is also disclosed.

Optical test probe for silicon optical bench

A monolithic semiconductor optical detector is formed on a substrate having a plurality of substantially parallel trenches etched therein. The trenches are further formed as a plurality of alternating N-type and P-type trench regions separated by pillar regions of the substrate which operate as an I region between the N and P trench regions. First and second contacts are formed on the surface of the substrate and interconnect the N-type trench regions and the P-type trench regions, respectively. Preferably, the trenches are etched with a depth comparable to an optical extinction length of optical radiation to which the detector is responsive.

Lateral trench optical detectors

A mold having a vee-shaped groove receives an optical fiber end in butted relationship with either another fiber end or with a mold wall surface which is perpendicular to the vee-shaped groove. Field forces are generated which urge unattached and disposable fiber seating elements into the groove, the seating elements in turn pushing the optical fiber end(s) into the groove until the side surface of the optical fiber end(s) are in tangential contact with both sides of the vee-shaped groove. While the optical fiber end(s) are so positioned, casting liquid is introduced into the vee-shaped groove. The seating elements remain within the casting.

Magnetic fiber optic casting apparatus

Wave propagation in thin film optical waveguides using gyrotropic or anisotropic material in either the substrate or adjacent top layer with respect to the thin film waveguide is analyzed and a mode converter capable of converting TE to TM or TM to TE polarization is disclosed. Several mode converters constructed in accordance with the present invention are set forth. Also disclosed are other optical circuit elements constructed from such mode converters including a gyrator, isolator, an optical switch, and a non-destructive optical readout for magnetic memories.

Polarization converter and circuit elements for use in optical waveguides

A fluorine containing silicate glass substrate is heated to a temperature sufficiently high to permit fluorine to out-diffuse from the surface thereof. A surface region is formed having a gradient fluorine concentration in a direction perpendicular to the substrate surface, the region of lowest fluorine concentration having the highest refractive index. The resultant device is capable of functioning as an optical waveguide.

Fluorine out-diffused optical device and method

An optical assembly structure wherein miniature optical components such as lasers, modulators, lenses, thin-film and fiber-optic waveguides, and photodetectors are critically aligned and supported for coactive operation by means of two or more wafers which are formed with complementary grooves and mortises to support the loose optical components such as lenses and fiber-optic waveguides and to receive alignment rails to insure the relativity of the wafers, which also have formed integral therewith optical elements such as waveguides, modulators, and lasers, to produce an integrated optical assembly somewhat in the manner of an 'optical bench,' wherein the bench structure also provides an active optical element.

Self-aligning support structure for optical components

An optical structure for the bidirectional coupling of light between each of a multiplicity of optical fibers and corresponding individual thin-film waveguides to achieve a leaky wave coupling from one guided mode structure to a second guided mode structure. The structure is particularly suited for fabrication by planar deposition and etching techniques and features the precise axial alignment of the optical elements by inserting the fibers in etched V-grooves in the substrate upon which are deposited the waveguides.
