A surgeon training apparatus includes a cassette, which includes biological tissue repurposed into a form consistent with the anatomical configuration of abdominal hernias, affixed into an anatomically correct silicon framework which replicates the abdominal anatomy. The framework positions the cassette in an anatomically correct position within the abdominal cavity, enabling surgeons to train using a properly positioned representation of the target anatomy, thus requiring the surgeon to properly use surgical tools to correct the pathologic condition caused by the hernia. The cassette is formed by applying biologic tissue to a specially designed 'plate,' which affixes the tissue block into the anatomic framework, and is adapted for connection to a grounding device so the surgeon can use cautery during the simulated hernia repair. The cassette can be positioned inside a manikin, and can be used to train surgeons to repair human hernias using multiple techniques, including robot assisted and laparoscopic methods.

Abdominal hernia simulation model for surgical training

Modified animal tissues, organs, and organ systems for use in simulated surgical procedures are disclosed. The tissues, organs, and/or organ systems can be modified by enhancing their electrical conductivity, by including simulated contents mimicking what would normally be present in live animals, and by having fake blood perfusing through them. Portions of different tissues, organs, or organ systems, which can be from the same or different animals, can be adhered to provide hybrid/chimeric tissues, organs, or organ systems, and also used for simulated surgical procedures. These modifications can provide surgeons with a more realistic experience during a simulated surgical procedure.

Modified animal organs for use in surgical simulators

A current testing device including a housing assembly, an electrical assembly and a circuit board assembly is disclosed herein. The housing assembly includes a housing that encloses the electrical assembly. The electrical assembly includes a battery, a microprocessor, a display, a keypad, a power button, an electrical port, and test cables. The microprocessor permits the user to simulate a fuse. The microprocessor has a memory in which a predetermined catalogue of fuses characteristics is stored. The user connects the test cables to a circuit board where the fuse is blown. The keypad allows the user to type the simulation characteristics while the display shows the results of the simulation.

Artificial blood compositions for use in simulated surgery, and kits including the compositions, are disclosed. Tissues, organs, and organ blocks which include dissolvable clots are also disclosed. Further disclosed are methods for carrying out simulated surgical procedures using the compositions, tissues, organs, organ blocks, and kits described herein.

A foldable trailer includes a substantially horizontal, substantially planar center section joined to at least one main axle and wheels assembly, at least one substantially planar rear section attached to the center section by a first hinged interface, such that the rear sections may be folded from a substantially horizontal position, coplanar with the center section, to a substantially vertical position relative to the horizontal center section, at least one substantially planar forward section attached to the center section by a second hinged interface, such that the forward sections may be folded from a substantially horizontal position, coplanar with the center section, to a substantially vertical position relative to the horizontal center section, a tongue section attached to an outermost forward section by a third hinged interface, such that the tongue section is enabled to fold downward around the third hinged interface, as the forward sections are folded, resulting in both the tongue section and the forward sections being oriented to a substantially vertical position relative to the center section, and a forward and a rear set of trolley legs, each set having trolley wheels. As the forward and rear sections are folded upward, the sets of trolley legs are deployed downward, lifting the folded trailer on the trolley wheels with the main axle and wheels assembly off ground level, such that the folded trailer may be moved about on the trolley wheels without interference from the main axle and wheels assembly.

A scanning probe system and method for using the same are disclosed. The system includes a probe that interacts with a specimen. The probe is caused to vibrate at a first frequency of the probe. A probe deflection signal indicative of an oscillation amplitude of the probe is generated and used to set the z-position probe position to maintain a property of the probe deflection signal at the first frequency at a predetermined value. A probe signal, having a DC and an AC component is applied between the specimen and the probe. The amplitude of a frequency component of the deflection signal at a mixing frequency of the first frequency and the second frequency is measured and used to generate an image or adjust the DC component.

Various methods and systems for determining one or more properties of a specimen are provided. One system for determining a property of a specimen is configured to illuminate a specimen with different wavelengths of light substantially simultaneously. The different wavelengths of light are modulated at substantially the same frequency. The system is also configured to perform at least two measurements on the specimen. A minority carrier diffusion length of the specimen may be determined from the measurements and absorption coefficients of the specimen at the different wavelengths. Another system for detecting defects on a specimen is configured to deposit a charge at multiple locations on an upper surface of the specimen. This system is also configured to measure a vibration of a probe at the multiple locations. Defects may be detected on the specimen using a two-dimensional map of the specimen generated from the measured surface voltages.

Methods and systems for determining one or more properties of a specimen

A highly sensitive, non-contact tank probe to measure surface conductance of thin film structures, and a method for using the same, are described. The tank probe includes inductor (L), capacitor (C) and resistor (R) circuitry that is driven by a signal generator at the probe's resonant frequency. The conductance of a film structure specimen is determined from measuring the signal that is reflected from the tank probe and it respective frequency. Various types of information can be obtained from the tank probe. For instance, information as to film thickness, doping concentration, and the presence of defects can be obtained. In one embodiment of the invention, the tank probe is formed of integrated circuits within a semiconductor substrate. Another aspect of the present invention pertains to a method of using the tank probe system to measure the conductivity of a material specimen.

An optical system for a scanning probe microscope provides both an optical on-axis view and an optical oblique view of the sample by means of two optical paths each providing an image to a CCD camera via an auto-zoom lens. A shutter alternately blocks the image of either view from reaching the auto-zoom lens. The CCD camera provides the optical image to a video display which also displays the scanning probe image, thus eliminating the need for eyepieces and allowing easy viewing of both the optical and scanning probe images simultaneously.

A scanning mechanism is provided for use in a scanning probe microscope. The scanning mechanism includes a stationary portion; a moveable portion; a plurality of springs attaching the moveable portion to the fixed portion, the plurality of springs providing tension against movement of the moveable portion relative to the stationary portion, the tension provided by the plurality of springs having a substantially linear spring constant over a scan distance; and one or more voice coils attached to either the moveable portion or the stationary portion for moving the moveable portion relative to the stationary portion in one or more orthogonal directions.

Atomic force microscope system is provided which is designed to be incorporated into or attachable to an objective lens which can be mounted on a lens turret of an optical microscope such that simultaneous atomic force microscopy and optical viewing of a sample through the objective lens can be performed. In one embodiment, the atomic force microscope (AFM) is designed to be removably attached to a standard objective lens of an optical microscope. In another embodiment, the AFM system is designed to be removably attached to an optical microscope and includes integrated optics for providing an optical view. In both embodiments, the optics are used solely for generating an optical view and/or other optical contrast mechanisms and are not used in conjunction with a detection mechanism of the AFM.

A single-axis active vibration reducing system for reducing vibrations in an object in a single axis. The vibration isolation system enables the sensing of motion of the center of mass of an object along a single axis and, with the proper positioning of a single sensor-actuator pair with feedback operation, the dampening of vibrations of the object along that axis. Due to the positioning and alignment of the actuator, the vibration isolation system of the present invention does not introduce appreciable off-axis vibration. The vibration reducing system includes an actuator positioned on the object to impart an actuation force along an actuator axis to reduce vibrations of the object in the vibrational axis without imparting substantial motion to the object other than in the vibrational axis.

A scanning probe microscope having numerous advantages is disclosed. Respective scanning force and scanning tunneling probes are removably mounted in the head using kinematic mounting techniques so that they may be substituted for one another without the need to adjust the cantilever deflection sensor. A linear position-sensitive photodetector in the deflection sensor eliminates further the need for adjustments. A motorized, non-stacked x,y coarse movement stage is kinematically positioned with respect to the base and features a minimized mechanical loop to reduce thermal and vibrational effects on the position of the sample. A z coarse movement stage positions the head kinematically with respect to the base and includes a motorized drive means which allows the height, tilt and pitch of the probe to be adjusted. The scanner includes x,y and z sample position detectors which provide an accurate measurement of the position of the sample with respect to the probe. The z position detector provides an output which is exclusive of sample tilt and which may be used as an output of the scanning probe microscope. The outputs of the x,y and z position detectors may also be connected in feedback loops with the controller to improve the performance of the scanning probe microscope.
