A dynamic active control system (DACS) configured for: (1) total vessel pitch axis control by fast symmetric deployment of water engagement devices (WEDs) or controllers, coupled with engine trim adjustments; (2) total roll and heading control by differentially deploying WEDs to counter rolling motions while simultaneously adjusting engine steering position to counter the steering moment associated with WED delta position; and (3) adjustment of the engine steering angle to counter yaw moments produced by gyroscopic stabilization systems.

Dynamic active control system with engine control

A software-based commissioning strategy for customization of a new marine vessel having a newly installed stability/dynamic active control system. The commissioning strategy will be implemented by using a proprietary customer-facing software embedded within a software module of a newly installed dynamic active control system for a new marine vessel (and a new hull type). The software-controlled commissioning strategy is configured to automatically determine the appropriate feedback gains for the marine vessel by controlling the deployment of the water engagement devices while simultaneously measuring and capturing the data generated from the resulting list angle, roll angle, roll rate, and yaw rate changes associated with the deployment. The software driven commissioning strategy is further configured for auto-calibrating the following functional parameters of the new marine vessel: (1) Speed-Based Bias Adjustments (SBBAs), (2) Roll Overall Gain (ROG), (3) Pitch Overall Gain (POG) and (4) Yaw Rate Gain (YRG) of the marine vessel.

Cooling apparatus for transferring heat from and cooling one or more heat generating components that support or drive a flywheel or other spinning member. The apparatus may include a first heat transfer element attached to and spinning with the spinning member, a second heat transfer element stationary with respect to the spinning member, wherein the first and second heat transfer elements move relative to one another, and wherein the first and second heat transfer elements are shaped and positioned in close proximity to one another so that substantial heat is transferred from the first heat transfer element to the second heat transfer element. Alternatively, the apparatus may include a set of rotating vanes mounted to rotate with the spinning member, an orifice configured to direct a spray of cooling liquid onto the rotating vanes, wherein the cooling liquid is sprayed onto the rotating vanes at a radially inward location, so that the liquid flows radially outward over the surface of the vanes as a thin film of liquid, and is thrown off the vanes by centrifugal action, and collecting apparatus configured to collect the liquid thrown off of the vanes.

A gyroscopic roll stabilizer for a boat. The stabilizer includes a flywheel, a flywheel drive motor configured to spin the flywheel about a spin axis, an enclosure surrounding a portion or all of the flywheel and maintaining a below-ambient pressure or containing a below-ambient density gas, a gimbal structure configured to permit flywheel precession about a gimbal axis, and a device for applying a torque to the flywheel about the gimbal axis. The flywheel, enclosure, and gimbal structure are configured so that when installed in the boat the stabilizer damps roll motion of the boat. Preferably, the flywheel drive motor spins the flywheel at high tip speeds.

Gyroscopic roll stabilizer for boats

A method and apparatus are disclosed for low-dust discharge of particulate material such as grain. The apparatus provides a nozzle having a hollow body with an inlet at the top and an outlet at the bottom. An impeller is mounted inside the body in an outwardly and downwardly flaring region below the inlet. A fluid stream of the particulate material drops through the inlet and impinges on the immpeller which deflects or throws the particles outwardly within the flaring region of the nozzle. The coarser, heavier particles have more outward momentum than the lighter, finer particles and are concentrated toward the wall of the nozzle below the impeller while the lighter, finer particles are concentrated toward the center, so that a rough separation is made and stream density is increased. A compacted downwardly moving mass is accumulated within the nozzle and is discharged through the outlet at controlled rate as a denser, relatively dust-free stream in open air.
