Technologies are disclosed for generating a machine image from a software package. A machine image build service receives a request to create a machine image, such as by way of a network services application programming interface (API). The request can include the software package and a selection of an operating system. The machine image build service utilizes a workflow service to execute a workflow for generating the machine image. The workflow causes a virtual machine instance that utilizes the specified operating system to be instantiated by an on-demand computing service. The software package is installed in the virtual machine instance. A snapshot is taken of the virtual machine to create the requested machine image. The machine image can be scanned by a network service for compliance with one or more requirements for execution in a service provider network. The machine image can also be submitted to a machine image marketplace.

Generating machine images from software packages

Functionality is disclosed herein for providing messages specified by a third party to customers of an electronic marketplace while maintaining customer privacy. An occurrence of a customer relationship management event configured by a third party is detected and a message is provided to one or more customers of an electronic marketplace. Actions of customers of the electronic marketplace might be tracked that relate to the message. Analytics may also be provided to a third party while maintaining customer privacy.

Technologies are described herein for scanning machine images using a scanning service to identify potential risks. The scanning service may be associated with a service provider network. A scan request is received at the scanning service that requests machine images to be scanned. One or more scans may be performed on each of the machine images. An execution environment may host a machine image during a scan of the machine image. Scan result data associated with the scans is stored. The scan result data may be used to provide scan results to the requestor.

Scanning machine images to identify potential risks

Disclosed are various embodiments for applying a pruning to data sets, files, logs, and/or any other information. A binning methodology may be employed to determine which data to retain or discard to determine a resulting set of data resembling an exponential decay where more recent items of data are more likely to be retained and more archaic items of data are more likely to be discarded. The resulting set of data may be associated with an average age.
