A method of assembling a turbine includes positioning a turbine nozzle against a forward inner nozzle support extending from a rotor assembly, and coupling a cover to the forward inner nozzle support. The method also includes inserting a tab that extends from the cover within at least one aperture defined in the turbine nozzle.

Method and system for assembling a turbine engine

A method for assembling a gas turbine engine is provided. The method includes providing a combustor liner support including a first portion formed with a plurality of circumferentially-spaced recessed areas, and a second portion extending from the first portion. The method also includes coupling the combustor liner support within a combustor such that during engine operations cooling air is channeled through the plurality of recessed areas to facilitate cooling the combustor liner support.

Methods and apparatus for assembling gas turbine engines

A method facilitates assembling a gas turbine engine including a compressor and a rotor assembly coupled in axial flow communication downstream from the compressor. The method comprises coupling a bypass system in flow communication with the compressor to channel a portion of flow discharged from the compressor towards the rotor assembly is channeled through the bypass system, and coupling a downstream end of the bypass system within the gas turbine engine such that the flow entering the bypass system flows past the rotor assembly and is discharged downstream from the rotor assembly.

A turbine airfoil includes opposite pressure and suction sidewalls, and extends in chord between opposite leading and trailing edges and in span from a root to an outer tip cap. The tip cap bridges the sidewalls, and a flute extends chordally along the pressure sidewall and below the tip cap.

Blunt tip turbine blade

A rotor system for a gas turbine engine is provided having an outer rotor which includes an annular outer spool that comprises at least one ring portion of increased thickness with respect to the remainder of the outer spool, attached to a relatively thinner, axially extending arm portion. A plurality of outer turbine blades are attached to the ring portion of the outer spool and extend radially inwardly into a working gas flowpath of the engine. A casing surrounds the outer spool and defines an annular cavity between the casing and the outer spool, which is sealed by forward and aft brush seals at the forward and aft ends thereof. At least one inlet port is formed through the casing for admitting a flow of cooling air to the annular cavity. Means are provided for directing this cooling air flow to the ring portion of the outer spool.

Turbine cooling, purge, and sealing system

A gas turbine engine includes a compressor powered by a turbine. The turbine includes a nozzle having vanes extending between outer and inner bands. Each vane includes an internal cooling plenum and a bypass tube extending through the bands. First and second manifolds surround the outer band and are disposed in flow communication with the plenums and bypass tubes, respectively. A bleed circuit joins the compressor to the manifolds for providing pressurized air thereto. A control valve modulates airflow to the first manifold and in turn through the cooling plenums of the vanes.

Modulated flow turbine nozzle

A method enables a gas turbine engine including a first rotor assembly and a second rotor assembly coupled in axial flow communication downstream from the first rotor assembly to be assembled. The method comprises coupling an upstream end of an extension duct to an outlet of the first rotor assembly, wherein the extension duct includes a plurality of panels coupled circumferentially, and coupling a downstream end of the extension duct to an inlet of the second rotor assembly using at least one fish mouth seal.

A blade retention assembly is provided that comprises: a disk, a plurality of blades, each having a dovetail disposed in one of an array of slots formed in the outer periphery of the disk, an annular inner retainer attached to the disk, and a plurality of arcuate blade retainers, the blade retainers being secured to the inner retainer by a hooked rabbet joint. A blade retainer is also provided, comprising an arcuate body having a planar inner face having an arcuate depression formed therein defining a sealing lip, and an aft face disposed opposite the inner face which has an arcuate rim formed therein.

Turbomachinery blade retention system

A gas turbine engine aspirating face seal includes rotatable and non-rotatable engine members and a leakage path therebetween. Annular generally planar rotatable and non-rotatable gas bearing face surfaces are operably associated with the rotatable and non-rotatable engine members respectively and are circumscribed about and generally perpendicular to a centerline axis. A substantially fully annular pull off biasing element is operably disposed for urging the non-rotatable gas bearing face surface axially away from the rotatable gas bearing face surface and circumscribed about the centerline axis. The pull off biasing element may be at least one wave spring or one bellville washer. The non-rotatable gas bearing face surface may be on a face seal ring mounted on a translatable cylindrical piston which is axially movable and supported by the non-rotatable engine member.

An aircraft gas turbine engine includes high and low pressure turbines having respective counter rotatable low pressure inner and outer rotors with low pressure inner and outer shafts in part rotatably disposed co-axially within a high pressure rotor and drivingly connected to first and second fan blade rows and first and second boosters respectively. A bypass duct radially bounded by a fan casing and an annular radially inner bypass duct wall surrounds the boosters axially located between the first and second fan blade rows. The engine has a high pressure compressor operable to produce an overall pressure ratio in a range of about 40-65 and a fan inlet hub to tip radius ratio in a range between 0.20 and 0.35, a bypass ratio in a range of 5-15, an operational fan pressure ratio in a range of 1.4-2.5, and a sum of operational fan tip speeds in a range of 1000 to 2500 feet per second.

Counter rotating aircraft gas turbine engine with high overall pressure ratio compressor

A face seal assembly is provided having an annular seal body mounted in an axially moveable relationship to a seal support structure. A piston ring is disposed between the annular seal body and the seal support structure forming a secondary seal. A first locator spring, which is an annular wave spring, is disposed between said seal support structure and the piston ring to urge the piston ring in an axial direction. Optionally, a second locator spring, also a wave spring, may be disposed between the piston ring and the seal support structure for urging the piston ring in a radial direction.

Seal for a rotating member

A gas turbine engine aspirating face seal includes a rotatable engine member and a non-rotatable engine member and a leakage path therebetween. Annular generally planar rotatable and non-rotatable gas bearing face surfaces circumscribed about a centerline are operably associated the rotatable and non-rotatable engine members respectively. Radially inner and outer tooth rings axially extend away from a first one of the rotatable and non-rotatable gas bearing face surfaces across the leakage path and towards a second one of the gas bearing face surfaces. A pull off biasing means is used for urging the inner and outer tooth rings axially away from the second one of the gas bearing face surfaces. The rotatable engine member may be a side plate mounted on a rotor disk and the non-rotatable engine member is mounted on a translatable piston axially movably supported on a stationary face seal support structure.

Aspirating face seal with axially extending seal teeth

A support arrangement for a brush seal positioned between a stationary and a rotatable component of a turbomachine. The brush seal has a downstream backing plate that includes an axially-extending lip adjacent its radially outermost end to minimize axial deflection of the seal as a result of a gas pressure differential acting across the seal.

An aircraft gas turbine engine assembly includes an inter-turbine frame axially located between high and low pressure turbines. Low pressure turbine has counter rotating low pressure inner and outer rotors with low pressure inner and outer shafts which are at least in part rotatably disposed co-axially within a high pressure rotor. Inter-turbine frame includes radially spaced apart radially outer first and inner second structural rings disposed co-axially about a centerline and connected by a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart struts. Forward and aft sump members having forward and aft central bores are fixedly joined to axially spaced apart forward and aft portions of the inter-turbine frame. Low pressure inner and outer rotors are rotatably supported by a second turbine frame bearing mounted in aft central bore of aft sump member. A mount for connecting the engine to an aircraft is located on first structural ring.

Overall performance in enhanced in gas turbine engines by providing a rotating seal including a rotating member arranged to rotate about an axis and having at least one annular projection extending radially outwardly therefrom, and a stator element having a first surface arranged to contact the projection. The stator element includes at least one slot formed in the first surface, the slot axially traversing the projection so as to allow a flow of purge air to pass. More than one such slot can be used, and each slot is preferably angled circumferentially in the direction of rotation of the rotating member.
