There is described a novel thermographic recording film, and more specifically, a novel image-forming system incorporated therein comprising at least one layer and including and a Lewis acid material, a di- or triarylmethane thiolactone dye precursor, an acidic organic material, a binder and a thermal stabilizer. Thermographic recording films comprising the novel image-forming system of the present invention exhibit excellent thermal stability, and desirable minimum optical densities, indicative of substantially less premature image development at elevated environmental temperatures. Embodiments of the invention wherein the thermographic recording films further include a light insensitive organic silver salt, a reducing agent, a binder and, preferably, a toning agent, show substantially enhanced image density.

There is described a novel thermographic recording film, and more specifically, a novel image-forming system incorporated therein which employs both thiolactone and silver reduction chemistries. Thermographic recording films comprising the novel image-forming system of the present invention exhibit excellent thermal sensitivity and visual color saturation, enhanced image density, and desirable visual minimum optical densities.

A process for producing and fixing an image uses an imaging medium comprising an acid-generating layer or phase comprising a mixture of a superacid precursor, a sensitizer and a secondary acid generator, and a color-change layer comprising an image dye. The sensitizer can absorb radiation of a sensitizer wavelength which does not, in the absence of the sensitizer, cause decomposition of the superacid precursor to form the corresponding superacid. The secondary acid generator is capable of acid-catalyzed thermal decomposition by the first acid to form a second acid, and the image dye undergoes a color change upon contact with the second acid. The medium is imagewise exposed to radiation of the sensitizer wavelength, thereby causing the sensitizer, in exposed areas, to decompose superacid precursor with formation of the fist acid. The medium is then heated to cause, in the exposed areas, acid-catalyzed thermal decomposition of the secondary acid generator and formation of the second acid. The components of the acid-generating and color-change layers or phases are mixed so that in exposed areas, the second acid causes the image dye to change color. At least the non-exposed areas, a copper compound and a reactive material more reactive than the image dye to the products resulting from decomposition of the superacid precursor in the presence of the copper compound, are used to decompose the superacid precursor and fix the image.

Process for fixing an image, and medium for use therein

Multi-functional vinylbenzyl and vinylphenyl pendant thymine (and uracil) groups are disclosed. The monomers can be used for the production of polymers useful in photoresist and other compositions as a function of the crosslinking reactivity of the pendant groups. Images in polymer are provided by exposure to actinic radiation (e.g., UV), containing such polymer and by solvent removal of non-exposed regions.

There is described a photographic system wherein development of an exposed photosensitive element is carried out in the presence of a quaternary pyridinium compound which has a fused 5 - to 12 - member saturated carbocyclic ring attached to the 2 and 3 positions of the pyridine ring.

Method of imaging using a polymeric photoresist having pendant

The medium is then heated to cause, in the exposed areas, acid-catalyzed thermal decomposition of the secondary acid generator and formation of the secondary acid. The components of the acid-generating and color-change layers or phases are mixed so that in exposed areas, the secondary acid causes the image dye to change color. At least the non-exposed areas, there is reacted with the superacid precursor a reactive material which irreversibly destroys the superacid precursor, thus fixing the image.

The present invention sets forth the incorporation of a substituted 2-phenyl-4,6-bis (trichloromethyl)-1,3,5-triazine in photoresists of lithographic printing plates for the purpose of promoting their shelf-life, room light stability, and developability. The present invention provides a photocurable composition comprising at least a photopolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least one terminal ethylenic group and capable of forming a polymer upon exposure to actinic radiation; and an s-triazine capable of initiating free radical polymerization of the photopolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer and being represented by the following general formula [I]: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is either OR.sub.4 or NR.sub.5 R.sub.6, wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 may or may not be identical with each other, either R.sub.5 or R.sub.6 may represent hydrogen, and wherein R.sub.4 and at least one of R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 represent a ballast group capable of preventing the substantial volatilization of the s-triazine from the photoresist composition, the ballast group being a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, the substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having at least 4 carbon atoms, the substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having at least 6 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 may or may not be identical with each other and each represent hydrogen, halogen, phenyl, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, or an alkoxyl group; X and Y may or may not be identical with each other and each represent chlorine or bromine; and m and n may or may not be identical with each other and are each an integer of 0, 1, or 2. Desirable compositions will further comprise at least one photooxidizable leuco triarylmethane dye.

An imaging process uses an imaging medium comprising a polymer having a plurality of first groups. This polymer is imagewise contacted with an imaging reagent comprising a plurality of second groups, thus causing, in the areas of the medium exposed to the imaging reagent, the second groups to react with the first groups and form a colored material, and thereby forming an image on the imaging medium. One of the first and second groups comprises a benzotriazinone or benzothiatriazine-4,4-dioxide benzotriazinone moiety and the other comprises a naphthol or a pyrazalone moiety.

There are disclosed thermally-processable image recording materials comprising a support carrying thereon; a di- or triarylmethane thiolactone dye, an organic silver salt, a binder; and a select group of substituted purine compounds for reducing a post-processed formation of a yellowish-brown color (gilding) within such materials.

Copolymeric mordant materials containing recurring units according to the following formula are disclosed: ##STR1## In such copolymers, each of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 can independently be alkyl; substituted-alkyl; cycloalkyl; aryl; aralkyl; alkaryl; or at least two of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, together with the quaternary nitrogen atom to which they are bonded, can complete a saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring; X is an anion; R.sup.4 is hydrogen or alkyl (e.g. methyl). The pendent 'b' group contain hydrogen-bonding sites for promotion of self-associated aggregation and ring unsaturation for photocyclization and control of physical properties (e.g., water insensitivity) of the image-receiving layer. The copolymeric mordant materials can be utilized as image-receiving layers in photographic products and processes of the diffusion transfer type. The mordants are especially adapted to the production of dye images exhibiting favorable maximum density (D.sub.max) and rates of dye transfer properties.

Hydroquinones form stable hydrogen-bonded complexes with N,N,N',N'-tetrasubstituted diamides of aromatic dicarboxylic acids in which two carboxyl groups are arranged para to one another on the same phenyl ring. These complexes are useful in rendering the hydroquinones more water-dispersible to assist their incorporation into photographic products. Also, the diamides may be incorporated into photographic products to reduce or eliminate various problems associated with hydroquinones, including migration of hydroquinones within the product during storage and the discoloration of images on storage due to oxidation of hydroquinone present in an image-receiving element of the photographic product.
