A xenon flash tube is disclosed utilizing a particular borosilicate glass for the lamp envelope which is sealed directly by hermetic seal to inleads of a metal alloy predominantly of iron, nickel and cobalt. Additionally, said flash tube employs particular electron emission means in the form of a porous sintered body of refractory metal having an electron emissive material dispersed therein. This flash tube construction can be operated at reasonably high energy loadings for an extended number of flashes without experiencing significant light output deterioration.

A lead-in seal of the type having a metal foil seal member sealed into an envelope, comprising a relatively narrow intermediate foil tab member connected between the foil seal member and a conductor. The result is reduced stress in the seal and less likelihood of cracking.

A glass support bead through which inlead wires extend in a miniature type of flash lamp is shaped to have sloping sides and a narrow ridge at the top extending from one to the other of the inlead wires, so that any unburned metal foil in a flashed lamp is not likely to accumulate on the top of the bead so as to cause an electrical short between the inlead wires.
