A tight-buffered optical fiber includes an optical fiber, at least a first buffer layer of a polymer material enclosing the optical fiber, and a plurality of strength members embedded in the first buffer layer and longitudinally disposed around the optical fiber. A second buffer layer of polymer material may also be formed to enclose the first buffer layer. The first and second buffer layer may be made of acrylate and may be either radiation or thermally curable. The second buffer layer may also have a plurality of strength members embedded in it and longitudinally disposed around the optical fiber.

An optical fiber cable has a core with a bore which loosely contains optical fibers and includes a single strength member unit preferably embedded in an outer jacket which surrounds the core. The single strength member unit allows for relative ease of bending of the cable in directions other than the bending directions in the plane of minimum bending energy for the cable, such as bending in the plane of maximum bending energy (MAX-BP) for the cable, and provides that the neutral surface associated with bending of the cable in the MAX-BP is outside the bore core and within the outer jacket. The single strength member unit, which is at least one strength member, furthermore provides tensile strength and antibuckling properties to the cable during storage and in expected installations, including an aerial installation. The outer jacket is releasably coupled to the core to provide ease of access to the optical fibers contained within the core bore.

An optical fiber cable comprises a central tube containing at least one optical fiber, a plurality of outer tubes, each containing at least one optical fiber, and at least two strength members, wherein the outer tubes and strength members are disposed around and in contact with the central tube, the strength members being between intermediate pairs of outer tubes. Preferably, a cord is wound around the outer tubes and strength members to hold them against the outer tube. Preferably, the optical fiber in the central tube is part of an optical fiber ribbon. Preferably, a plurality of individual optical fibers are provided in the outer tubes. The optical fibers are loosely contained within the central and outer tubes. One or several additional tubes containing insulated copper pairs or a coaxial cable may also be provided. Preferably, the cable tubes and the strength members are disposed in a reverse oscillating lay or S-Z fashion around the central tube.

An optical fiber cable which is flame resistant and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, which includes a central strength member, a fluid impervious tube wound around the strength member, a plurality of optical fibers loosely received in the tube, a sheath of plastic material encircling the tube and the central member, a thermal barrier layer intermediate the tube and the sheath and encircling the tube and the central member to protect the elements inwardly of the heat barrier from heat and flame external to the barrier layer and a water blocking material in any otherwise empty spaces within the tube and between the barrier layer and the tube.
