Aryldialkylmethanes such as cumene are converted to the corresponding hydroperoxides by reaction with oxygen in the presence of a promoter which may be an alkali metal borate such as borax, an alkali metal salt of a polymer such as an acrylic polymer, or an alkaline reagent in combination with a specific proportion of added water or water of hydration, also exemplified by borax. High yields of the hydroperoxide are obtained, particularly when the promoter includes water.

Macrocyclic polyether oligomers, preferably as mixtures of oligomers of different degrees of polymerization, are incorporated in a direct displacement reaction mixture for the formation of polyetherimides, said reaction mixture comprising at least one alkali metal salt of a dihydroxy-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon and at least one bis(halo- or nitrophthalimide). The macrocyclic oligomers can be isolated from an earlier-prepared linear polyetherimide composition. Their incorporation in the reaction mixture does not increase the proportion of oligomers in the polyetherimide product.

Aromatic polyether polymers, illustrated by polyethersulfones, polyetherketones and polyetherimides, are prepared by a phase transfer catalyzed reaction between a salt of at least one dihydroxyaromatic compound and at least one substituted aromatic compound such as bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfone, bis(4-chlorophenyl) ketone or 1,3-bis�N-(4-chlorophthalimido)!benzene, in a monoalkoxybenzene such as anisole as diluent and in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst, preferably a hexaalkylguanidinium salt.

Method for preparing aromatic polyether polymers

Aromatic polyether polymers, illustrated by polyethersulfones, polyetherketones and polyetherimides, are prepared by a phase transfer catalyzed reaction between a hydrate of a salt of a dihydroxyaromatic compound and a substituted aromatic compound such as bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone, bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) ketone or 1,3-bis[N-(4-chlorophthalimido)]benzene. Isolation of the hydrate and its conversion to the anhydrous salt prior to the polymerization reaction affords a polymer of higher molecular weight than other methods of preparing the anhydrous salt.

Bisphenols are prepared from cyclic monoterpene precursors and high glass transition temperature polymers are prepared from bisphenols. More particularly, substantially pure 4-[1-[3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4 -methylcyclohexyl]-1-methylethyl] phenol and 4,4'-[1-methyl -4-methylethyl)-1,3-cyclohexandiyl] bisphenol are isolated and high glass transition temperature bisphenol polycarbonates are prepared.

Spherical monodispersed polymeric particles are prepared from vinyl monomers and crosslinking polymerizable polyvinyl monomers. More particularly, a novel process for producing spherical monodispersed gel particles that are about 1-6 .mu.m in size and contain at least about 0.5 to about 3 weight percent (based on polymerizable vinyl monomer/vinyl polymer) of a polymerizable polyvinyl monomer is disclosed. The process comprises the steps of combining an isoalkanol solvent, a polymerizable vinyl monomer and a crosslinking polymerizable polyvinyl monomer under timed and monitored conditions.

1,3-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-dialkylcyclohexanes, as illustrated by 1,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1, 3-dimethylcyclohexane, may be prepared by the reaction of phenol with a 1,5-dialkyl-1,4-cyclohexadiene under acidic conditions. Polycarbonates prepared therefrom have high glass transition temperatures and are expected to be ductile.

Bis[4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-phenyl]alkanes, as illustrated by 2,2-bis[4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-phenyl]propane, may be prepared by the reaction of a bisphenol A ester or a similar compound with a p-trialkyltin-substituted anisole, followed by demethylation with a Lewis acid such as boron tribromide. Polycarbonates prepared therefrom are ductile and have high glass transition temperatures.

Halo-displacement reaction products of aliphatic hydroxy compounds and chloro- or bromo-substituted aromatic nitrogen-heterocyclic compounds are conducted under alkaline conditions in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst, in the substantial absence of water inorganic salts other than those formed in the reaction. The method is particularly useful for the preparation of substituted chlorotriazines. In a preferred embodiment, the reagents constitute at least about 25% by weight of the organic phase of the reaction mixture.

A heterocyclohexylidenebisphenol having the formula ##STR1## wherein X is S, SO, SO.sub.2 or N--OCOR and R is a C.sub.1-4 primary or secondary alkyl or phenyl optionally substituted by an ethyl or 1-2 methyl groups may be prepared by the reaction of bisphenol A or a similar compound with the corresponding thiopyranone or piperidone. The thio compound may be oxidized to the corresponding sulfone. Polycarbonates prepared from said heterocyclic bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cycloalkanes have high glass transition temperatures and are expected to be ductile.

Heterocyclic bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cycloalkanes, as illustrated by 4,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)thiopyran and the corresponding acetylated piperidine, may be prepared by the reaction of bisphenol A or a similar compound with the corresponding thiopyranone or piperidone. The thio compound may be oxidized to the corresponding sulfone. Polycarbonates prepared from said heterocyclic bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cycloalkanes have high glass transition temperatures and are expected to be ductile.

High molecular weight, thermoplastic aromatic polycarbonate compositions exhibiting improved oxygen barrier properties are provided which comprise structural units derived from a diester bisphenol or a cyano-substituted bisphenol, or an aromatic dihydric phenol in admixture with either of the foregoing bisphenol compounds. Novel cyano-substituted bisphenol monomers are also provided.

Thermoplastic polycarbonate composition having improved oxygen barrier

Aromatic thermoplastic polyarylates containing structural units derived from a bisphenol of cyclohexanone, preferably 1,1-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)cyclohexane, and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or mixture of such acids, are provided which exhibit improved oxygen barrier properties.
