Disclosed are sorbents having superior water leachability performance characteristics especially when used as sorbents in semi-dry (CDS), high moisture (SDA), and fully wet SOscrubbers. Also disclosed are methods for the production of such performance-enhanced sorbents, and methods for the use of such sorbents in the removal of mercury and possibly one or more other heavy metals or other contaminants from various gaseous streams. The sorbents are carbonaceous substrates treated with a bromine-containing compound, especially gaseous bromine, and with at least one organic compound that contains at least one olefinic double bond.

In the improved process the diphenylethane is reacted with bromine in the presence of bromination catalyst in a reaction vessel by feeding diphenylethane to the reaction vessel below the liquid level of bromine in the reaction vessel. The improvement comprises contacting diphenylethane, bromine, and catalyst at a rate sufficient to obtain a diphenylethane predominant product having enhanced color and particle size.

The crude brominated aromatic compound undergoes a single processing step of grinding in the presence of heated air. The temperature is sufficient to effect substantial removal of impurities and yet remains below the melting point of the brominated aromatic compound.
