A method is provided for paging a mobile station () served by a wireless telecommunications network (A). The method includes: remembering a last known location of the mobile station (), and implementing a first paging strategy for the mobile station () within a first collection of cells () served by a first mobile switching center (). If a response to the first paging strategy is not received by the first mobile switching center (), then the method further includes: selecting one or more cells () served by a second mobile switching center () based upon the last known location of the mobile station (); identifying the selected cells () in an intersystem paging request; forwarding the intersystem paging request from the first mobile switching center () to the second mobile switching center (); and, in response to the second mobile switching center () receiving the intersystem paging request, paging the mobile station () in those cells () served by the second mobile switching center () which are identified in the intersystem paging request.

A method in one application of maintaining a paging status associated with a communication device. The method also comprises paging the communication device based on the paging status. A system in one application comprising a communications controller configured to store a paging status that is associated with a communication device. The system further comprising a communications manager communicatively coupled to the communications controller. Also, at least one data store is communicatively coupled to the communications controller. The communications controller pages a communication device based on a paging status. The paging status is stored in one of the at least one data store.

Method and system for network support for optimized paging of communication devices

A method in one example has the steps of: notifying a calling mobile terminal that a called mobile terminal is not available to receive a call; and notifying the called mobile terminal that an unsuccessful call attempt was made to the called mobile terminal via a mobile terminated short message when one of the following occurs, the called mobile terminal completes a current call and the called mobile terminal powers on.

This technique is applied in the circumstances where an intersystem page message, e.g. an IS-41 ISPAGE2 message, is received in a first border switching module. The intersystem page message may originate from a second border switching module. In this case, the network determines whether the second border switching module is manufactured by a different network provider than the first border switching module. If so, a routine to address inconsistencies in the location area parameter is implemented so that an efficient paging strategy can be invoked.
