The present invention provides a system and method for managing in a wireless communication device the receipt of a paging signal from a wide area wireless network. The method includes detecting by the wireless communication device whether the user of the wireless communication device is available for receiving an alert regarding incoming information via the wireless communication device. When the device determines that the user is not available for receiving the alert, one or more intervals during which a paging signal is expected as being possible are ignored by the wireless communication device, such that any paging signal for the wireless communication device that is present during the one or more intervals that are being ignored by the wireless communication device are not received by the wireless communication device.

System and method for managing the monitoring and receipt of a paging signal

An electronic device () includes a housing (). A touch sensitive surface () can be disposed along the housing. The touch sensitive surface can include a recessed surface feature () on a portion of the touch sensitive surface. A phone call is made from an initiator phone to a receiver phone (). The receiver phone determines how many people are near the receiver phone, and generates a response based on how many people are near the receiver phone. This response can be, for example, a message that is sent to the initiator phone and can be displayed at the initiator phone, indicating either that no one is near the receiver phone or that multiple people are near the receiver phone. The number of people that are near the receiver phone is monitored, and when just one person near the receiver phone is detected, various different actions can be taken. A message can be sent for display at the initiator phone indicating that there is only one person near the receiver phone, or the receiver phone can prompt the user to call back the initiator phone.

A portable electronic device () for detecting type and orientation of a hand of a user is provided. The device can include a housing (), a display (), a control circuit (), a first sensor (), and a second sensor (). The first sensor can determine a type of hand of the user supporting the portable electronic device. The second sensor can determine an orientation of the portable electronic device relative to the user. The control circuit of the portable electronic device can perform a function based on the type of hand as determined by the first sensor and the orientation of the portable electronic device as determined by the second sensor.

An electronic device can include detectors for altering the presentation of data on one or more displays. In a wearable electronic device, a flexible housing can be configured to enfold about an appendage of a user, such as a user's wrist. A display can disposed along a major face of the flexible housing. A control circuit can be operable with the display. A gaze detector can be included to detect a gaze direction, and optionally a gaze cone. An orientation detector can be configured to detect an orientation of the electronic device relative to the user. The control circuit can alter a presentation of data on the display in response to a detected gaze direction, in response to detected orientation of the wearable electronic device relative to the user, in response to touch or gesture input, or combinations thereof. Secondary displays can be hingedly coupled to the electronic device.

Method and apparatus of increasing speech intelligibility in noisy environments

A system and method is provided for confirming the identity of a user, where the confirmation is made using biometric data. The system includes an internal speaker having an audio port, which is positioned within the ear of the user, and is adapted for producing a signal having one or more frequencies. The system further includes an internal microphone having an audio port, which is positioned within the ear of the user, and is adapted for detecting a resulting signal including the signal produced by the internal speaker and any corresponding signal reflections. A determination is then made as to whether the resulting signal detected by the internal microphone matches the corresponding predetermined expected signal, based upon a prestored hearing profile.

System and method for determining an in-ear acoustic response for confirming the identity of a user

A squished trellis encoder encodes blocks of information with unequal error correction. A multiplexing switch partitions the information block into a first portion and a second portion. A first trellis encoder encodes the first portion. A second trellis encoder encodes the second portion. An initial state information generator maps the states of the first trellis encoder to the second trellis encoder to establish initial conditions for the states of the second trellis encoder. A delay delays the second portion from processing by the second trellis encoder until the initial state information generator has mapped the states. An associated decoder can use the novel squished approach or other alternative approaches.

Encoding method and apparatus using squished trellis codes

A weighting device utilizes soft reliability values and class weighting factors to detect errors in digitized information. The soft reliability values can be provided by a decoder that processes the information according to a predetermined coding scheme. Bits representing the encoded information are classified accorded to classes defined by a bit sensitivity analysis. The bit sensitivity analysis can be based on subjective and/or objective criteria. As incoming bits are received by the weighting device, they are classified and class reliability values are computed for each class based on the soft reliability values. The class reliability values are then weighted to produce weighted class reliability values. Error concealment algorithms, coding rate determination, and coding rate requests can be activated based on the weighted class reliability values.

Method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for error detection and channel management in a communication system

A transmitter (604) of a TDMA cellular telephone (600) includes power control circuitry (100) comprised of variable gain stage (104), mixer (106), bandpass filter (109), RF amplifier (110), and directional coupler (112) in a forward path, and two detectors (116 and 117), four A/D converters (118, 119, 121 and 123), digital controller (120), and D/A converter (126) in a feedback path. In operation, the variable gain stage (104) is responsive to a gain control signal AOCCNT (128) for adjusting a modulated IF signal, which is then mixed in mixer (106) with an RF reference signal to produce the transmit RF signal. The temperature and supply voltage are sampled by controller (120) at the beginning of each time slot. Adjustments in the gain control signal (128) dictated by the sampled temperature and supply voltage are made by controller (120) in each time slot prior to keying the RF amplifier (110). The transmit RF signal is amplified by the RF amplifier (110) to produce the transmit output signal which is coupled by the directional coupler (112) and transmit filter (618) to an antenna (620) for transmission. The forward power and reverse power of the transmit output signal are sampled by controller (120) at the end of each time slot. The sampled forward power is used by controller (120) in calculating the value of the gain control signal for the next time slot. If the sampled reverse power or supply voltage exceed respective maximum values, the RF amplifier (110) is dekeyed by controller (120).
