A compression technique, for use in a network environment, compresses transform data to improve transmission rates in low bandwidth applications. The source data is decomposed into transform data that consists of spatially related coefficients. In a client-server environment, a client issues a request, which defines a block of the coefficients and at least one quantization value, for source data. In response to the client request, the server extracts transform data defined by the request. The transform data is quantized, in accordance with the quantization value, and is compressed to generate compressed data. The server transfers the compressed data to the client. The client decompresses the compressed data to obtain quantized data, and de-quantizes the quantized data to recover the transform data. The client then reconstructs the original source data from the transform data. Techniques for transmitting to the client incremental data, for use in conjunction with cached data, is disclosed. The use of the compression techniques for images in a medical informatics system is also disclosed.

Methods and apparatus for compression of transform data

An image transfer object is disclosed that provides the necessary mechanism to conduct a dynamic transfer operation. The image transfer object includes a static reference to dynamic data. The image data is 'dynamic', in that the user may request additional views of the image. An image recipient computer receives the static reference to identify a source image on a server, and generates a first request, based on the static reference, for a view of the source image to the server. In response, the server transmits data to the image recipient computer. The image recipient computer displays the first view of the source image for viewing by the user. The user may then select a different portion of the source image, and/or a different resolution to designate a second view of the source image. The image recipient computer generates a second request to the image server for the second view, and the image server transmits additional data to generate the second view of the source image. Thereafter, the second view of the source image is displayed at the image recipient computer. A sender of the image may transmit a context for the image via e-mail or the recipient computer may download the image from a Web site. Techniques to configure the dynamic transfer object are also disclosed.

Methods and apparatus for an image transfer object

Transform data is partitioned to more efficiently process requests in a server to transfer source data to a client. The transform data, generated from source data, comprises spatially related coefficients such that a block of coefficients permits reconstruction of identifiable portions of the source data. The transform data is partitioned into a plurality of partitions of coefficients. Each partition consists of coefficients for reconstruction of an identifiable portion of the source data. The client generates a request for one or more partitions of coefficients. The client request is sent to the server. The server extracts the partitions of coefficients set forth in the request, and transfers the partitions of coefficients to the client. Techniques for partitioning of transform data to support lossy compression are disclosed.

Methods and apparatus for partitioning transform data

An image collaboration system conducts resolution independent image collaboration among a host computer and participating client computers. The subject of the image collaboration involves at least one source image. The source image is transformed into a hierarchical representation, such that each level of the hierarchical representation is sufficient to reconstruct the source image at a given resolution. The host computer displays, at a first resolution, an image based on one or more of the source images. To conduct the resolution independent image collaboration, the host computer generates a resolution independent description of the image, which describes the first display image relative to the source image, and broadcasts the resolution independent description of the image to the participating clients. In response, the participating clients generate an image from the resolution independent description of the image at the host computer at a resolution sufficient for display at the participating clients. Resolution independent image collaboration for use in a medical informatics system is also disclosed.
