The present invention is a composition comprising a linear saturated polyester and from 0.5 to 30 percent by weight of thee polyester of at least one ester of an ethoxylated polyfunctional alcohol having a molecular weight of from 500 to about 1,500. The ester is of an ethoxylated aromatic alcohol and a carboxylic acid wherein the ethoxylated aromatic alcohol has the formula

The present invention is a polyamide composition with high impact strength which is retained at low temperatures. The composition consists of from 0.5 to 95 percent by weight of at least one amine terminated polyamide. The amine terminated polyamide comprises from 3 to 97 mole percent of the polyamide acid molecules having amine groups as at least two end groups of the polyamide acid molecule. The composition further contains 3 to 99.5 percent by weight of a polyamide having at least 50 mole percent of its end groups as acid groups or capped groups. The composition further has from 2 to 50 percent, and preferably 15 to 30 percent based on the total weight of the polymer of a reactive polymer. The reactive copolymer is based on a copolymer of ethylene and an .alpha.-olefin having 3 to 8 carbon atoms. This copolymer is identified as the 'ethylene copolymer'. The reactive copolymer has a reactive moiety, preferably grafted to the ethylene copolymer, which is preferably an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof. There are at least an average two reactive groups per molecule of copolymer.

Polyamide compositions with high impact strength at low temperatures

The present invention is directed to a reaction product of a polymer and a graft linking agent, resulting in a modified polymer especially suited for blending with one or more second thermoplastic polymers. The modified polymers of the invention comprise a reaction product of the polymer and an acyllactam having the general formula: ##STR1## wherein L is a linking moiety that is capable of a thermal or radical-initiated addition reaction with said polymer; and preferably ##STR2## or N.sub.3 SO.sub.2 --R.sub.6 -- wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are the same or different and comprise at least one of the following moieties: Hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, halo, cyano, carboxylic acid, ester, amide, imide, or acyllactam, and wherein R.sub.4 is -- (valence bond) or ##STR3## with R.sub.5 being hydrogen, alkyl, or aryl, and R.sub.6 being alkylene or arylene; and wherein the acyllactam portion of the grafting agent has an alkyl chain length, n, of about 2 to 11 carbon atoms, preferably about 3 to 11 carbon atoms, most preferably about 5 to 11 carbon atoms. The reaction product of the first polymer and grafting agent itself is useful as a structural resin, and does not have to be blended with a second polymer. However, it also demonstrates adhesive properties useful in laminations to other polymers, coextrusions with other polymers, metal bonding, and the like, and could be used in applications such as these. The reaction product is a stable product that may be stored for further use. Alternatively, it may be desirable for some applications to blend all the components, a first polymer, grafting agent, and a second thermoplastic polymer, either together or sequentially.

The present invention is a flame retardant composition comprising from 5 to 20 weight percent of a homopolymer of a monomer having the formula: ##STR1## wherein n=0 or 1, X is bromine or chlorine and R is hydrogen or methyl. The polymer has a molecular weight between 1.times.10.sup.3 and 10.times.10.sup.6, and preferably 5.times.10.sup.3 to 5.times.10.sup.6. The molecular weight is determined by gel permeation chromatography in tetrahydrofuran. The composition contains from 80 to 95 weight percent of a polyamide. There can be from 0 to 10, preferably 1 to 10, and more preferably 2 to 6 weight percent of antimony oxide. Optionally, the composition can contain an impact modifier and/or a filler.
