A medical device may include a shaft extending between a proximal end and a distal end. The shaft may include a lumen therein. The medical device may include a handle coupled to the proximal end of the shaft and may include a mode selector. The mode selector may be adapted to transition between a first mode and a second mode of the medical device. The medical device may further include a compressed fluid source. In the first mode, the compressed fluid source may be fluidly coupled with the shaft so as to impart a negative pressure in at least a portion of the lumen. In the second mode, the compressed fluid source may be fluidly coupled with the shaft so as to impart a positive pressure in the at least a portion of the lumen.

Apparatuses for the implantation of medical devices and methods of use thereof

Medical implants comprising biocompatible materials and having surface features that may assist in biocompatibility upon implantation in the body are described. Methods for manufacturing such implants are also described. The manufacturing process may include applying a biocompatible material to a texturized surface of a mold. The implants may include various features to assist their positioning, fixation, and/or identification during and/or after implantation.

Medical implants and methods of preparation thereof

The teachings are directed to an intragastric device comprising a flexible and expandable bladder having a predetermined shape upon expansion for contacting the antrum of the stomach of a subject. The device is designed to avoid passage of any part of the device beyond the pylorus and lower esophageal sphincter while the bladder is expanded during use. In these embodiments, the bladder can contain a high specific gravity material when expanded; wherein, the high specific gravity material contributes to an in vivo specific gravity of the device that ranges from about 1.2 g/ml to about 2.1 g/ml and functions to direct the device to the pyloric antrum of the subject during use of the device. Moreover, these embodiments can include a filling material comprising a biocompatible fluid component and a hydrogel component to make the device substantially leakproof and contribute to the in vivo specific gravity of the device.

High specific gravity intragastric device

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for attaching or maintaining the position of a therapeutic or diagnostic device in a body lumen, such as the GI tract without necessarily requiring any penetrating attachments through any body walls. The system can include at least two elements: a proximal orientation element and a distal support element. The proximal orientation element can be configured to reside at least partially within the esophageal lumen and the distal support element can be configured to reside in the stomach, such as along the greater curve of the stomach. An intragastric support system can have a first configuration in which the long axis of the proximal orientation element is substantially parallel and/or substantially coaxial with the long axis of the distal support element, and a second configuration in which the long axis of the proximal orientation element is not substantially coaxial with the long axis of the distal support element. The second configuration can thus advantageously retain the intragastric support system in place and prevent unwanted proximal migration of the distal support element into the esophagus or distal migration into the intestine.

Methods and devices for intragastric support of functional or prosthetic gastrointestinal devices

An intragastric balloon has an ellipsoid or like configuration so that the balloon implanted in the stomach tends to rotate or rock only about one axis when a surgeon attempts to manipulate the balloon, for example, for the purpose of finding a filler valve and inserting a filler tube into it. For easy location, the filler valve is disposed on the equator. A retrieval tab is mounted to the exterior of the balloon, to permit capturing of the balloon and retrieval from the stomach, after the balloon has been deflated and is no longer desired for weight control purposes. Visual and X-ray opaque markers are located in the proximity of the valve and of the retrieval tab to facilitate their visualization with an endoscopic light when the balloon is in the stomach.

Intragastric balloon with improved valve locating means

An injection reservoir or button is adapted for implantation beneath the skin of human and animal patients in conjuction with tissue expanders and drug delivery devices. The injection reservoir includes a base and an exterior wall which define a chamber of liquid reservoir. A duct connects the chamber with an expandable bag of the tissue expander. An elastic rubber member is affixed within the interior of the chamber to act as a sealing member. The rubber member is an inverted dome and is self-sealing to needle punctures because it has a concave interior side which is under compression as a result of having been manufactured into a substantially dome-shaped configuration and thereafter inverted. A metal guard plate is included within the interior of the chamber to guard the base against accidental puncture by an over extended hypodermic needle.

Self-sealing injection reservoir

An injection reservoir or button is disclosed which is adapted for implantation beneath the skin of human and animal patients in conjunction with tissue expanders and drug delivery devices. The injection reservoir includes a base and an exterior wall which define a chamber or liquid reservoir. A suitable duct connects the chamber with an expandable bag of the tissue expander. An elastic rubber member is affixed within the interior of the chamber in a configuration wherein its side abutting the chamber is in compression, thereby rendering the member self-sealing to punctures by a hypodermic needle. A metal guard plate is included within the interior of the chamber to guard the base against accidental puncture by an over-extended hypodermic needle.
