Maize lls1 promoter

The present invention is drawn to methods and compositions for suppressing cell death in plants. Specifically, novel proteins and genes are provided for use in plant transformation. The proteins and genes are useful for activating disease resistance, enhancing plant cell transformation efficiency, engineering herbicide resistance, genetically targeting cell ablations, and other methods involving the regulation of cell death in plants.

Polypeptide compositions for controlling cell death and disease resistance in plants

Compositions and methods for enhancing disease resistance to a pathogen in a plant are provided. Methods of the invention comprise stably transforming a plant with an antisense nucleotide sequence for a gene encoding an enzyme in the C-5 porphyrin metabolic pathway and operably linking said antisense sequence to a pathogen-inducible promoter, such that invasion of a cell by a pathogen elicits a hypersensitive-like response that results in confinement of the pathogen to cells of initial contact. Transformed plants and seeds are provided. Nucleotide sequences encoding a wild-type maize urod gene useful in the present invention and the amino acid sequence for the protein encoded thereby are provided. These compositions are also useful for regulating cell death in specifically targeted tissues. A maize lesion mimic, dominant mutant phenotype, designated Les22, and the molecular basis for its manifestation are also provided.

Methods and compositions for regulating cell death and enhancing disease resistance to plant pathogens

Compositions and methods for enhancing disease resistance to a pathogen in a plant are provided. The present invention is directed to a multiple purpose garment rack which is particularly adapted for use on a closet support rod for supporting and retaining a number of neckties and other articles of clothing and accessories in a compact and versatile manner that is adapted for use in travel. The garment rack includes a hanging hook extending from a top portion and a plurality of tie support arms extending horizontally.

A vertical frame supports an interchangeable mandrel or die which receives the center portion of an elongated metal rod having opposite threaded end portions, and the rod is clamped to the die by a pivotal locking bar secured by a wedge actuated by a hydraulic cylinder. The frame also includes a vertical plate having upper and lower corner blocks connected by a pair of vertical guide rods. The rods support a horizontal carriage cross bar for vertical movement, and the cross bar pivotally supports upper end portions of a pair of arms each formed by rigidly connected parallel spaced plates having aligned straight cam slots. A pair of bending rollers are supported by the lower end portions of the arms, and a hub member extends between the plates of each arm and supports slide blocks which move within the cam slots. A hydraulic cylinder moves the cross bar vertically to move the arms and bending rollers along converging paths for overbending the rod around the die. An elongated adjustment screw is rotatably supported by the lower corner blocks and a center block and extends between the plates forming the arms. The screw has oppositely threaded portions engaging the hub members to provide for conveniently and precisely adjusting the spacing between the bending rollers for accommodating dies and rods of different sizes and shapes.

U-bolt bending apparatus

A frame supports an interchangeable mandrel or die which receives the center portion of an elongated metal rod having opposite threaded end portions, and the rod is clamped to the die by a locking bar actuated by a hydraulic cylinder. The frame also includes a set of vertically spaced cross members connected by a pair of parallel spaced guide rods which support a carrier bar for vertical movement. The carrier bar pivotally supports corresponding end portions of a pair of arms each formed by parallel spaced plates, and each pair of plates defines slightly angled aligned cam slots. A pair of bending rollers are supported by the opposite end portions of the arms, and a hub member extends between the plates of each arm and supports rollers which engage the corresponding cam slots to provide for moving the arms and bending rollers along non-parallel converging paths for overbending the rod around the die. An elongated adjustment screw is rotatable supported by the lower cross member and extends between the plates forming the arms. The screw has oppositely threaded portions engaging the hub members to provide for convenient and precisely adjusting the spacing between the bending rollers for accommodating dies and rods of different sizes.

Elongated straight cylindrical metal rods are threaded along opposite end portions, and the cylindrical outer surface of the center portion of each rod is marked to form a visual indicator of the longitudinal center of the rod. The straight rods are successively inserted into a rod bending machine having a mandrel with a mark indicating the center plane of the bending operation. The mid-point mark on each rod is aligned with the center plane mark on the machine, and the rod is bent to form a precision U-bolt. Preferably, the mark identifying the center of each rod extends circumferentially around the metal rod and is formed by a stripe of color contrasting ink directly on the rod or on a label attached to the rod to provide a permanent mark which does not require rotating the rod to find the mark.

Production of threaded metal rods for making U-bolts

The straight rods are successively inserted into a rod bearing machine having a mandrel with a mark indicating the center plane of the bending operation.
