A self-decoupled RF coil and method for adjusting the same is disclosed. The RF coil is an array of elements including at least one loop. Electromagnetic coupling between elements in the array causes an induced current in the at least one loop. The induced current has two modes. A reactance inserted in the at least one loop balances the two modes. The balanced current modes cancel. This cancelation results in self-decoupling of at the least one loop from the other elements in the RF coil array.

Methods for operating a magnetic resonance apparatus and systems therefrom are provided. A method includes generating, via a coil former surrounding a subject or object of interest and disposed in the magnetic resonance apparatus, a plurality of field modes external to the subject or object, measuring for each of the plurality of external field modes, an associated internal field produced within the subject or object, generating, via the coil former a combination of external modes to produce a target internal field in the subject or object, and measuring nuclear magnetic resonance signals due to the resulting field from the combination to acquire an image or spectrum of the subject or object.

In the various embodiments, cell size imaging is performed using a method that relies upon the acquisition of gradient echo and spin echo data during contrast agent (CA) passage through tissue and estimation of 'perturber' size using the ratio of &#x394;R* and &#x394;R. When measured at CA equilibrium, the magnetic field perturbations, and associated MRI signal changes, are determined by the cellular features and not the vasculature. Thus, in cell size imaging the cells act as the perturbers.

In another aspect, the present invention relates to a method for NMR measurements of an arbitrarily shaped region of interest of a living subject. In one embodiment, the method comprises the steps of applying a broad bandwidth of RF pulses to the arbitrarily shaped region of interest to obtain a corresponding spectrum, wherein substantially entire range of chemical shifts in the spectrum is excited from the arbitrarily shaped region of interest, interleaving a plurality of radial k-lines in radial k-space per excitation with non-selective refocusing pulses and obtaining spatial localization for the spectrum of the arbitrarily shaped region of interest.
